Chiang Mai History Workshop: The Foreign Community in Chiang Mai 1910 – 1930

Have you ever wondered about the heritage and legacy of foreign communities in Chiang Mai? A hundred years ago, hardly anyone came here on vacation and only one person is known to have come to retire. So what brought people here, to the “back of beyond”, what did they do here, and how did they live?

In this five-part workshop, we’ll learn about the foreign community based in Chiang Mai around a century ago. The focus will be on the British and Americans, but we won’t forget those from other countries (French consuls, German railway engineers, Swiss merchants, Japanese photographers and so on), nor of course the Siamese, Burmese, Chinese, and Shan communities, and especially not the Lan Na people themselves. The sessions will be followed by optional visits to heritage locations (to be agreed).

Cost: 1500 THB for 5 sessions
