May 10,17,24,31 and June 7, 14, 2021
Mondays, 10:00 – 11:30 am.
This term in the Film Appreciation class, we’re doing things a little differently. In addition to our usual profound critiques of the themes, writing, and techniques of the films we watch, we’re going to have a mini-“meet-the-scriptwriter” series. On May 17, we will discuss Don Linder’s film “The Last Executioner,” and he will happily answer any and all questions about the writing and making of the film. On 31 May, Rajni Basumatary, the scriptwriter, director, and star of “Jwlwi-The Seed” will join us on Zoom from India to discuss and answer questions about her 2018 film. Some of you may know Rajni from her years in Chiang Mai as the wife of the Indian Consul.
Films to be discussed:
|The Crying Game||1992||UK||English|
|The Last Executioner||2014||Thailand||Thai-English|
|The Awful Truth||1937||US||English|
|Jwlwi – The Seed (on YouTube)||2019||India||Bodo|
|The Burmese Harp||1956||Japan||Japanese|
The facilitator for the course is Don Linder, a scriptwriter, fiction, travel and culture writer, and academic, who has travelled, lived, and written on five continents. His first feature-length film “The Last Executioner” premiered in 2014 and won numerous film awards including Thailand’s prestigious Tukata Tong Award for Best Film and Best Screenplay. Don’s most recent film, “The Cave” (about the boys in the cave in Chiang Rai) premiered internationally in Busan, London, and Vancouver in October 2018 and in Thailand in November 2018.
