(Re)Writing the History of Ayutthaya
a talk by Chris Baker

In 2017, on the 250th anniversary of the city’s fall in 1767, Chris Baker and Pasuk Pongpaichit published A History of Ayutthaya: Siam in the Early Modern World, followed by a Thai version in 2020. So what is new? In this talk, Chris will briefly review how Ayutthaya is portrayed in mainstream Thai-language history, and then explain what he and his wife are trying to do in this book. There will be an opportunity for questions after the talk.

Chris Baker and his wife Pasuk Pongpaichit are the major writers about Thai political, literary, economic, and political matters in English. Chris is a long-time editor of the Journal of the Siam Society. Together, Chris and Pasuk were awarded the 2017 Fukuoka Grand Prize for their work in preserving Asian arts and culture and academics.
