Lucy Starling, Missionary and Writer in North Siam
An Illustrated Lecture by Graham Jefcoate, with Discussion
The Missionary Lucy Mercer Starling was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 1879.
In 1909, The Hopkinsville Kentuckian reported that “Miss Lucy Starling, one of Hopkinsville’s most accomplished young women, will shortly leave
for Siam to enter the missionary work of the Presbyterian Church. Miss Starling is a gifted musician and is highly educated”. On arriving at Chiang Mai, Starling began to write regularly to her parents, and a selection of her early letters from Chiang Mai, Phrae and Nan was published in the newspaper between 1910 and 1914. With her later autobiography, Dawn over temple roofs, and other writings, the letters provide a rich resource for Starling’s life and work as a missionary and a unique insight her character and accomplishments.
But how did they help shape an image of the north?
