Pop-Up Choir: Singing for the Masses

Everyone can sing. Maybe you’re not a professional rock star or opera singer, but why let that stop you from doing something that is not only good for you, but FUN?! This is a choir with no printed music, and no expectations other than to come and have a really good time. By the end of each 90-minute session, you’ll be belting out a popular song in three-part harmony. Nothing to prepare – just show up, listen, follow instructions, and be prepared to surprise yourself.

You’re probably wanting to know which songs we’ll sing, right? Well, that part’s a surprise. Each week will be a different song, covering different eras, with something to please everyone. Some singing techniques will be shared, but these sessions are intended to give you an opportunity to sing with abandon, sing in community, and live out your secret (or not so secret) pop star dreams. Backing tracks will be used for a full, rich sound – like karaoke on steroids.

Dress comfortably, and leave your ego at the door. Singers with experience or no experience are all welcome.

About the Presenter:

Joanne Lauterjung is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and educator who is passionate about the health and social benefits of singing. Having overcome extreme shyness herself, she has dedicated herself to helping others discover their own authentic voice and sing out, no matter what anyone told them in childhood! Joanne led the 36-member Strand Singers Choir in Yangon, Myanmar, and now performs with a variety of groups in Chiang Mai, including Global Harmonies Choir. She has also performed with Maya Angelou, Bobbie McFerrin, Holly Near, and at Carnegie Hall with the Seattle Men’s Chorus. She received a Master of Arts in Conflict Transformation from Eastern Mennonite University’s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding, and holds certifications from Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience (STAR), Partnership for Youth Empowerment (PYE) Global, and Musicians Without Borders.
