The Peoples of Northern Thailand
An exploration offered by Rebecca Weldon
Northern Thailand has been a crossroads of trade and exchange for centuries. It is home to many peoples speaking different languages and of unique cultures. The diversity of its population is a fundamental aspect of its identity. This lecture will outline the ethnic groups, their geographic and linguistic origins and introduce their natural and cultural heritage. It will also offer a perspective upon important aspects of historical relationships and illustrate regional connections in the “Golden Triangle” area.
Rebecca Weldon is a cultural consultant who has lived in Northern Thailand for 40 years. Raised in Laos, she studied anthropology and museology and returned to the region to work with the Mae Fah Luang Foundation in Chiang Rai. She is currently the Convenor of the Informal Northern Thai Group, organizing lectures for the public.
