Writing about Chiang Mai
A Workshop on Anglo-American Writing about Chian

On-Line using Zoom

This workshop will investigate some key texts about the city and region by British or American authors from the early to mid-20th century. We will explore the following questions: Which themes were chosen and how were they addressed? Who were the audiences and how did the work get published? Was there a Chiang Mai “school” or style of writing? Did any writing of real literary merit emerge?

The following authors/texts will be examined: “The Paradise Consul”: W.A.R. Wood’s Chiang Mai; “In the field”: Writing by American Women Missionaries; Leigh Williams: A Teak-Wallah and his Jungle Prison; “Chang!”: Alec Waugh, the King’s White Elephant, and the Beginnings of Chiang Mai Travel Writing; “A Yankee Doctor in Chiang Mai”: Edwin Cort’s autobiographies; and Reginald Le May and his Asian Arcadia.

Cost: 1,200 THB for this Six Week Workshop
