SUMMARY:Thailand: The War Years
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nWorld War Two had barely ended when a series of violent conflicts erupted in Asia and Southeast Asia\, which greatly affected Thailand economically\, culturally\, and politically. From 1954 on\, after the Communist Viet Minh expelled the French from Vietnam\, Thailand was faced with new challenges with war all around it and a communist insurgency challenging its traditional way of life. Great change occurred inside Thailand during the Second Indochina War Years\, most commonly ascribed as 1959-1975. But beginning in the early 1950s through at least 1984\, Thailand experienced the most rapid social\, cultural\, economic\, and political changes arguably of any country in the world. This presentation attempts to describe Thailand during these war years and how these changes affected the population. \nAbout the Presenter: \nPaul T. Carter\, PhD lives in Chiang Mai\, Thailand where he lectures and writes on lessons-learned from the Second Indochina War\, explores lost battlefields\, and liaisons with former warriors. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Thai Studies\, Chulalongkorn University\, Bangkok. \nA retired U.S. Army intelligence officer\, he has a YouTube channel @Carter on Conflict and was a contributor to the American PBS documentary The Hmong and the Secret War. Dr. Carter provides occasional lectures at Payap University Lifelong Learning\, and on Cross Cultural Communications at Mahidol University. He devotes his time and money to a Christian charity in Thailand and a rural schools’ development project in Laos. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:The Highland People Discovery Museum
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThis museum reflects a period of extensive interest in the cultures of diverse ethnic groups living in remote areas of northern Thailand and neighboring countries. In the 1960s the Tribal Research Institute was established under the auspices of the Ministry of Interior on the grounds of Chiang Mai University. It facilitated cooperation and exchange of research within the context of development and change. Supported by many organizations including the Ford Foundation\, Asia Foundation and SEATO\, it linked research by academics to organizations having a long history in the area\, particularly\, Christian missions that crossed borders. And\, due to development of these remote areas under the leadership of HM King Bhumibhol Adulyadej\, Rama IX\, knowledge of the highland peoples became a national priority. \nAs a result\, documentation and collections were moved to a dedicated center to create an archive and museum to preserve and share knowledge of the hill area cultures with local communities. It includes exhibitions featuring the Akha\, Lahu\, Lisu\, Karen\, Mien\, Hmong\, Lawa\, Thin\, Khmu and Mlabri peoples and offers reconstructions of their living spaces in the extensive gardens. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:One Day Excursion to Lamphun and Salak Yom Festival
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nSalak Yom in Lamphun is an annual event held in September\, among the ethnic “Yong” of Lamphun Province. The Salak Yom Festival features the presentation of elaborately decorated “trees of gifts” to the Buddhist monks and novices of Wat Phathat Hariphunchai. The tall bamboo pole\, the centerpiece of the ritual is decorated with thousands of brightly colored tufted rods\, palm leaf manuscript holder\, foodstuffs and money\, the lower halves of the tree are decorated with daily objects\, cooking utensils\, cloths\, fruits\, vegetable and various kind of containers. Originally\, the Salak Yom festival was a rite of passage for young women in ethnic Yong society. The tree was prepared and offered by women. Salak Yom was considered to be equal to the merit gained from ordaining as a Buddhist monk. \nItinerary: \n8.30  Vans leave for Lamphun from Lifelong Learning Payap Center \n9.00  Arrive at Wat Phathat Hariphunchai\, the royal temple of Lamphun. The temple origins date from the 11th century but the central stupa is thought to originate in the 9th century. This temple was first rebuilt in 1443 by King Tilokaraja of Lanna kingdom Chiang Mai. At the temple participants will have the unique opportunity to observe the Salak Yom festival. \n10.00  Walk (or ride in the van) to the near-by National Museum of Lamphun. The temple was founded around 1150 when Lamphun was the capital of the Mon Dvaravati Kingdom of Hariphunchai. According to local legend\, the temple was founded much earlier in the days of Queen Chama Devi\, who founded the town of Lamphun in the early 9th century. \n12.15  Transfer to lunch at Krua Wandee Thai restaurant \n13.15  Leave to visit the peaceful Dharma Park and Inson Wongsam Art Gallery at the home of the National Artist of Lamphun\, Ajarn Inson Wongsam. SUMMARY:Collected Chin Textiles from Three Countries
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nLifelong Learning Payap participants will first have a short presentation by the Director of KALM Village\, a new art\, craft and culture center located in the Chiang Mai old city.  Following the introduction to KALM\, we will have a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about the Chin People and Culture through a talk by the family that is currently exhibiting their collection of Chin textiles at KALM Village.  You will see the textiles and hear stories about ten of them\, plus our speakers will answer your questions and lead you through their exhibition. After the program you may want to remain to have lunch or coffee at the restaurant or coffee shop inside the Village\, and explore the other exhibits and places of interest there.  The Village is fully handicap accessible. \nAbout the Exhibit: \nTextiles are an essential part of Chin culture\, which encompasses various groups of people living in western Myanmar\, northeastern India and eastern Bangladesh. The Chin people\, also called Zo\, Lai or Kuki\, have a rich and diverse tradition of textiles\, which reflect their style\, skill and cultural significance. Textiles are not only admired for their aesthetics and craftsmanship\, but also used as a way of narrating stories\, events and beliefs. \nThe exhibition includes a selection of textiles\, garments and jewelry from the YOYAMAY collection\, which spans over 30 years. The collection covers different Chin speaking groups\, such as Northern Chin\, Southern Chin\, Khumi/ Khami/ Mro\, and Sho. \nBesides the heritage textiles and objects that YOYAMAY has collected and displayed in this exhibition\, Kalm Village is hosting a mini pop-up shop by YOYAMAY\, which features their work in preserving knowledge through documentation and production of their contemporary textiles and products. This is part of their ongoing effort to create opportunities for Chin women to earn a living with their inherited knowledge. \nThe exhibition invites us to explore the history from the perspective of Chin people with their valuable cultural heritage\, and to examine how textiles can strengthen the sense of kinship and belonging. The exhibition also offers us ways of learning from the past to better understand and shape our present situation.” \nParking is available in a lot across from the Village.  We will limit our group to 30 participants\, so sign up early to be sure you will get to attend this special presentation. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:
