SUMMARY:Enhancing Observational Skills - Drawing as a Way to Foster a Deeper Appreciation of our Surroundings
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nIn this course\, we will explore the power of drawing as a tool to sharpen our observational skills and foster a deeper appreciation of the natural world. Based on the insights of American naturalist Peter Steinhart\, we will develop our awareness and understanding through drawing as both a skill and a form of Zen meditation. \nThroughout the course\, students will engage in drawing exercises designed to enhance their awareness\, an underutilized human faculty that is crucial for observational drawing. As we improve our ability to see and capture scenes\, we will experience the benefits of heightened awareness in various aspects of our lives and work. \nStudents will also discover the shared attitudinal foundations between drawing\, mindfulness meditation\, and the scientific mindset\, emphasizing the interconnections between these disciplines. By honing our drawing skills\, we will deepen our knowledge of the world around us\, fostering a sense of belonging and connection to nature. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:Four-Day Excursion to the Provinces of Nan and Phrae
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThis four-days\, three-nights\, excursion will offer participants the opportunity to see and learn from a Lanna scholar and professor\, Dr. Ratanaporn Sethakul Ph.D.\, about the history\, culture\, architecture\, and way of life of the Lanna people in Nan and Phrae over the years. \nItinerary \nDay 1: Friday June 9 (Lunch/Dinner) \n\n8.30 a.m.Our air-conditioned coach will leave from the LLL office at the Payap University Kaew Nawarat Campus (across from McCormick Hospital). We will take a mountain road to Nan Province. Before reaching to our destination\, we will have a short coffee break at a PTT station where there are good toilet facilities and snacks to purchase. Then stop for lunch at restaurant in city of Phrae. After lunch we will continue our bus ride to Nan Province.\n3.00 p.m. Arrive at hotel in Nan Province. Check in to hotel and relax.\n4.30 p.m. Depart from hotel to visit Wat Phumin\, which is said to be the most attractive temple in the town of Nan. Its unique architecture and its colorful 19th century murals that show scenes of daily life of Nan\, one well-known scene is called Whisper of Love. This Lanna Tai Lue style temple was founded in 1596. After seeing the Wat we will explore the area around the temple grounds\, and after that walk to Hauen Hom Restaurant to enjoy our dinner. Then return to Hotel.\n\nDay 2: Saturday June 10 (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) \n\n7:00 a.m. Breakfast at hotel\n8.30 a.m. Check out of the hotel and depart to Wat Nong Bua\, the “The Lotus Pond Monastery”\, which is stands about 40 kilometer north of Nan. It was constructed in 1862 by Tai Lue people\, who figured prominently in the history of the Nan valley region from the 19th century onward. The temple is famous for its mural paintings\, which are similar in style of those at Wat Phumin in downtown Nan. We will be able to see the village surrounding Nong Bua that is inhabited by the Tai Lue who emigrated from the Sipsongpanna region of southern Yunnan in 1836. Tai Lue came to inhabit The Nan Valley after King Kawila\, a local ruler in the late 18th century\, raided southern Yunnan areas to repopulate the Tai population in the eastern regions of Lanna. Today\, the\nvillage continues to retain much of its traditional culture\, including distinctive Tai Lue textiles that are produced at a local cooperative. After that return to town. Lunch will be served at local restaurant. After lunch visit the Nan National Museum to learn more about the history and culture of Nan. Then continue by coach ride to Phrae.\n5.00 p.m. Arrive Phrae and check in to hotel.\n6.30 p.m. Dinner at hotel. After dinner we will provide an optional activity for anyone who would like to visit Kad Kong Kao (the Phrae walking street market).\n\nDay 3: Sunday June 11 (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) \n\n7:00 a.m. Breakfast at hotel\n8.30 a.m. Leave hotel to visit Khum Chao Luang. Built in 1892\, this imposing building sporting a mixture of Thai and European architecture styles\, was the home of the final Lord or Chao Luang of Phrae. The structure later became the governor’s residence and is today a museum on local history. Visitors can learn about the history and culture of the people in Phrae and the Lanna Kingdom. From there we will take a short walk through the old town of Phrae. The walk will culminate at Baan Wong Buri\, one of the most distinctive buildings in Phrae. The Pink and White Wong Buri house was constructed between 1897 and 1907. Although the teak wood house is now open to the public as a museum\, part of the complex is still occupied by the descendants of the Lord of Phrae\, the nobleman who ruled the province at a time when the region wasn’t under direct rule from Bangkok.\nLunch at local restaurant\nAfter lunch\, visit Wat Phra That Cho Hae\, which is located on a small hill about 10 kilometers southeast of Phrae town. The temple was founded in the Sukhothai era. Wat Phra That Cho Hae is a major religious\, perhaps the most sacred Buddhism site of Phrae.
