SUMMARY:Enhancing Observational Skills - Drawing as a Way to Foster a Deeper Appreciation of our Surroundings
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nIn this course\, we will explore the power of drawing as a tool to sharpen our observational skills and foster a deeper appreciation of the natural world. Based on the insights of American naturalist Peter Steinhart\, we will develop our awareness and understanding through drawing as both a skill and a form of Zen meditation. \nThroughout the course\, students will engage in drawing exercises designed to enhance their awareness\, an underutilized human faculty that is crucial for observational drawing. As we improve our ability to see and capture scenes\, we will experience the benefits of heightened awareness in various aspects of our lives and work. \nStudents will also discover the shared attitudinal foundations between drawing\, mindfulness meditation\, and the scientific mindset\, emphasizing the interconnections between these disciplines. By honing our drawing skills\, we will deepen our knowledge of the world around us\, fostering a sense of belonging and connection to nature. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:Four-Day Excursion to the Provinces of Nan and Phrae
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThis four-days\, three-nights\, excursion will offer participants the opportunity to see and learn from a Lanna scholar and professor\, Dr. Ratanaporn Sethakul Ph.D.\, about the history\, culture\, architecture\, and way of life of the Lanna people in Nan and Phrae over the years. \nItinerary \nDay 1: Friday June 9 (Lunch/Dinner) \n\n8.30 a.m.Our air-conditioned coach will leave from the LLL office at the Payap University Kaew Nawarat Campus (across from McCormick Hospital). Then stop for lunch at restaurant in city of Phrae. After lunch we will continue our bus ride to Nan Province.\n3.00 p.m. Arrive at hotel in Nan Province. Check in to hotel and relax.\n4.30 p.m. Depart from hotel to visit Wat Phumin\, which is said to be the most attractive temple in the town of Nan. Its unique architecture and its colorful 19th century murals that show scenes of daily life of Nan\, one well-known scene is called Whisper of Love. This Lanna Tai Lue style temple was founded in 1596. After seeing the Wat we will explore the area around the temple grounds\, and after that walk to Hauen Hom Restaurant to enjoy our dinner. Then return to Hotel.\n\nDay 2: Saturday June 10 (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) \n\n7:00 a.m. Breakfast at hotel\n8.30 a.m. Check out of the hotel and depart to Wat Nong Bua\, the “The Lotus Pond Monastery”\, which is stands about 40 kilometer north of Nan. It was constructed in 1862 by Tai Lue people\, who figured prominently in the history of the Nan valley region from the 19th century onward. The temple is famous for its mural paintings\, which are similar in style of those at Wat Phumin in downtown Nan. We will be able to see the village surrounding Nong Bua that is inhabited by the Tai Lue who emigrated from the Sipsongpanna region of southern Yunnan in 1836. Tai Lue came to inhabit The Nan Valley after King Kawila\, a local ruler in the late 18th century\, raided southern Yunnan areas to repopulate the Tai population in the eastern regions of Lanna. Today\, the\nvillage continues to retain much of its traditional culture\, including distinctive Tai Lue textiles that are produced at a local cooperative. After that return to town. The structure later became the governor’s residence and is today a museum on local history. Visitors can learn about the history and culture of the people in Phrae and the Lanna Kingdom. From there we will take a short walk through the old town of Phrae. The walk will culminate at Baan Wong Buri\, one of the most distinctive buildings in Phrae. The Pink and White Wong Buri house was constructed between 1897 and 1907. Although the teak wood house is now open to the public as a museum\, part of the complex is still occupied by the descendants of the Lord of Phrae\, the nobleman who ruled the province at a time when the region wasn’t under direct rule from Bangkok.\nLunch at local restaurant\nAfter lunch\, visit Wat Phra That Cho Hae\, which is located on a small hill about 10 kilometers southeast of Phrae town. The temple was founded in the Sukhothai era. Wat Phra That Cho Hae is a major religious\, perhaps the most sacred Buddhism site of Phrae. The highlight is the 33-meter-tall Chiang Saen-style phra that (pagoda)\, wrapped with bright brass sheets\, which enshrines holy relics of Lord Buddha.\nReturn to town with a brief stop at the Mhor Hom learning Center to learn about the the history of local Mhor Hom\, and the process to create products using traditional indigo dye.\nReturn to hotel and relax.\n6.30 p.m. Transfer to dinner at restaurant\n\nDay 4: Monday June 12 (Breakfast/Lunch) \n\n7:00 a.m. Breakfast at hotel.\n9.00 a.m. Check out and depart to visit the Free Thai Museum. SUMMARY:Secrets for Aging Healthily and Happily
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nIn thinking about how to live healthily and happily\, we need to draw on many wisdoms\, those of the ancient world\, the Indigenous world\, the non Western world\, and modern science. Unhealthy living contributes to huge societal costs. My focus will be on strategies to realize a “health dividend” for both individuals and societies. My talk will share some research I have been doing on “how not to get old” and achieve lifelong vitality. A major theme of course is that healthy and happy living go hand in hand. The “secrets” to happy and healthy living will be revealed. \nAbout the Presenter: \nGerald W. Fry is a Distinguished International Professor at the University of Minnesota. SUMMARY:Qigong for Organ System Balance - Morning Course
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nDuring our 6-session morning course\, we will focus on a series of standing movement and breathing exercises with the intention of strengthening selected internal organ systems. We will begin by focusing on the stomach organ system\, which plays a major role in digestive health\, as well as the health of our other organ systems. During the latter part of the course\, we will use the same exercises to introduce how to balance some of the Yin organ systems\, such as the spleen and pancreas. Over the length of the course\, participants will gradually learn basic Yin-Yang theory through the body practice. Time for Q&A and discussion will be included at the end of each session to solidify our understanding of the exercises’ benefits for the health of our internal organs\, especially as we get older. Beginners\, as well as practitioners of all levels\, are welcome. \n*Morning course participants are highly recommended to continue for the afternoon course\, which will provide a deeper theoretical understanding of the organ systems and meridian alignment.

SUMMARY:Expressing “Thainess” at 7-Eleven
DESCRIPTION:Description: \n7-Eleven stores are strikingly important in modern Thai life. Over a couple of decades their significance has become increasingly clear to the presenter. One obvious indicator is the ubiquity of their distinctive red\, white\, green\, and orange signs across the country. Their importance is also demonstrated in less obvious ways: \n\nFormer rice farmers now purchase their former crop at raan sewen.\nRural dwellers rate the modernity of their community based on the presence or absence of a store.\nThais of all religious and ethnic groups are frequent customers.\nMembers of the Buddhist majority are likely to “attend” their neighborhood store more often than they attend their\nAnd TV commercials for consumer products routinely note the availability of beauty products or snacks at the nearby 7-Eleven.\n\nThe approach used does not rely on surveys\, statistical analysis or detailed interviews. Instead\, insights are based on observation\, rumination and photography during random visits to a cross-section of stores in Chiangmai and` rural areas. Five stores that are diverse in location and customer base: “hip urban\,” “university and highway-adjacent\,” “peri-urban market complex\,” “rural market area\,”\, and “genuinely rural\,”provide rich opportunities for rumination and comparison. \nTopics covered correspond roughly to the geography of products for sale at representative raan sewen. For example: \n\nJust inside the door of any 7-Eleven there is a supply of “urgent need” items—condoms\, batteries\, diarrhea and headache remedies.\nBehind the cash counter customers find an impressive array of hard liquor and wine\, with beer in a distant cooler.\nMany stores also have elaborate coffee-making equipment behind the counter\, where customers order hot americanos or iced lattes. Other stores\, perhaps with a different customer base\, lack this service.\nIn any 7-Eleven the most important products are snacks on open shelves and microwave-ready prepared dishes found in freezer cases. [Dozens of YouTube videos examine these products.]\nAnd there are dozens of other product lines worthy of examination and speculation: dairy products\, baked goods\, grooming and beauty items for women and men\, peripheral equipment for mobile phones and computers\, children’s toys\, soft drinks\, juices\, bottled water\, and miscellaneous-and-surprising items.\n\nIndividual items and product lines are examined from a variety of viewpoints: Does a product reflect Thai traditional culture\, or adaptations of tradition\, or adoption of global culture\, or brilliant innovations? Are there urban/rural differences in stocking particular items? Or are class or age differences reflected in particular items found on shelves? \nThe presentation will examine 7-Eleven stores and their customers from a number of viewpoints. The purpose is not to present final conclusions\, but to observe\, speculate\, and stimulate discussion. After I have my say\, I hope audience members will enrich this session by offering their own observations and speculations. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:Enchanted Land Book Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nBook Title: Enchanted Land. Foreign Writings about Chiang Mai in the Early 20th Century (River Books 2023) \nFormat: Illustrated Introduction by the Editor (Graham Jefcoate) with Readings from the Book \nIn the years between 1867 and 1941\, Chiang Mai and northern Siam (the present-day north of Thailand) was home to a small but influential community of farang or western foreigners. The westerners who came to live and work in the north during this period fell generally into three main categories: missionaries associated with the American Presbyterian Mission; the so-called “teak-wallahs”\, as the managers and assistants employed by the foreign forestry companies were known; and government officials\, who were either foreign diplomats or specialists working for the Siamese government. The improved accessibility of the region created by the expansion railway network also meant that\, by the mid-1920s\, more recreational travellers were visiting the north. \nMany of these residents and visitors and wrote about their lives\, their work and experiences in the north in the form of letters\, reports\, magazine articles\, memoirs\, novels\, short stories and even poetry. The present book provides a selection of their writings\, very few of which are currently in print or easily available. The writings are personal and often vivid. As Ben Svasti has said\, in the book you “can almost hear them chatting away about their work\, their dinner parties\, their club\, the climate\, insect pests and elephants in this enchanted land so distant in so many ways from their homelands in the west.” \nProgramme: \nAfter an introduction and some readings from the book there will be the opportunity to ask questions\, buy copies (at a special discount) and have them signed by the editor. \nThere will also be a display of some of the rare books on which Enchanted Land is based and an opportunity to see other rare books in the Lifelong Learning Center Library. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:
