SUMMARY:A Tree of My Own A Book By Nui Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nBased on Nui Wilson’s decades of volunteer work with Karen refugee families in Portland\, Oregon\, A Tree of My Own follows the journey of Posada\, a young Karen girl\, and her family from Burma to a refugee camp in Thailand\, and finally to Portland where they make their new home. \nKaren refers to a variety of peoples living in Burma and Thailand. Some live in mountains and remote rural areas\, some along the coasts and river deltas\, and others in towns and cities. Karens are diverse in language\, culture\, religious belief\, life experience\, and integration with neighboring groups. \nKaren communities in Burma have endured decades of armed conflict\, both with the central government and between their own factions. Since the end of World War II\, millions of Karens have faced hardships of war: displacement\, hunger\, separation of families\, injury\, and and often a daily struggle to survive. These dire circumstances create both an existential threat to Karen people overall and a lifelong challenge for nearly every individual Karen person: Surviving the world while maintaining the integrity of their Karen identity. \nKaren refugees began settling in camps along the Thailand-Burma border in the early 1980s. Their numbers grew steadily over time. As the camps grew\, armed conflict inched closer to the border\, and finally spilled over. By the mid-1990s\, Karen refugee camps in Thailand were coming under attack from cross-border violence and internal strife. \nFacing insecurity\, statelessness\, and lack of opportunity\, many Karen refugees sought to build new lives elsewhere. Some received asylum and were resettled in the west. Today\, Australia\, New Zealand\, the UK\, and the United States all have vibrant overseas Karen communities. \nNui Wilson is a Karen woman born and raised in western Thailand. She studied law and psychology at Chiang Mai University\, and moved to the United States in 2007. Seeing that many Karen refugees from Burma were coming to America\, Nui volunteered to help with their transition and resettlement. She has worked with the Karen community in Utah\, Oregon\, and Thailand for almost 20 years. \nJoin Nui for a reading from A Tree of My Own\, and a discussion on the lives and aspirations of Karen refugees. \nNui Wilson currently lives in Portland\, Oregon with her husband and two children. A Tree of My Own is her first book in a series featuring the lived experiences of Karen communities. \nCOST: 350 THB

SUMMARY:What's What in Wat Suan Dok- with Phra KK
DESCRIPTION:What are the different parts of a Thai Buddhist temple–the areas\, buildings\, objects? How is the ordination hall used? Does every wat have a scripture library?\nJoin Lifelong Learning Payap for a specially-arranged lecture and tour on Thursday\, July 3\, led by Buddhist monk and teacher the Venerable Phra Kyo Kyo\, who teaches Buddhism in English regularly at Wat Suan Dok’s Monk Chats. Phra KK has presented Buddhism to over ten thousand people of all nationalities and backgrounds over the past ten years. \nPhra KK has generously offered to explain and answer questions about the different areas\, buildings\, and activities that make up life at any temple\, as well as those traditions\, facilities\, and functions particular to Wat Suan Dok. \nThe Venerable Phra will take us on a tour of the temple grounds. He will highlight significant objects as well as elements of Hindu and animist influences found throughout the Wat. \nThailand’s Buddhist temples\, or wats\, serve a variety of religious\, educational\, and social needs. Wats give shelter to monks and novices\, organize their interaction with the lay public\, and support the religious and cultural life of the people. Thai temples operate schools\, host community events\, run welfare programs\, and preserve ancient traditions. While most temples around the country have the same important elements in common\, each wat is unique. \nThere are over 300 temples in the city of Chiang Mai. Wat Suan Dok\, founded in 1370\, has a long history and special place in Chiang Mai’s culture and identity. It is a center for Buddhist teaching\, practice\, and public programming. At the national level\, the Wat has Royal recognition\, and houses the Chiang Mai campus of the Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University. \nThis English-language presentation will be in the Monk Chat office just up (south) from the sala across from the large meditation hall under construction. \n \n \nCOST: 350 THB

SUMMARY:Learning\, Using\, and Retaining Kham Mueang\, the Northern Thai language
DESCRIPTION:Kham Mueang\nLearning\, Using\, and Retaining Kham Mueang\, the Northern Thai language in Chiang Mai\nThis presentation is based on what our presenter\, Dr. Michael Calavan\, has learned through interviews with 20 Chiang Mai women and men who range widely in age\, education\, and occupation. He will share with us their experiences and insights about the use of Northern Thai – or Kham Mueang – in the past\, present\, and future. From attending this class you will gain a richer understanding of the use of the local language and perhaps increase your curiosity about Lanna culture. \nDr. Calavan came to northern Thailand for the first time in 1969\, and since then has observed the solidification of central Thai as the primary language of education and official affairs. By combining his own perspective with those of his interviewees from Chiang Mai\, he will explore the complex question of Kham Mueang’s importance to Northern Thai identity. \nThe presentation and discussion will focus on the following issues: \nWhat is Northern Thai? Is it a language or dialect? How is it different from standard Thai? \nWhen\, Where\, How\, and Why is it Used? What situations are appropriate for using it? For example\, how is it used at such places as a municipal office\, a bank\, a hospital\, a fresh market or department store? How does its usage change with family members\, friends\, and neighbors\, or at school and on the playground? \nHow is it Learned and Retained [or Not Retained]? SUMMARY:Franz Liszt\, Claudio Arrau\, and Bennett Lerner: A Musical Family Tree
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThis event features the screening of the 2021 documentary movie\, “Piano Lessons: The Life and Art of German Diez-Nieto”\, followed by an interview with Bennett Lerner and filmmaker and pianist\, Francesca Khalifa\, and a discussion with the audience.  In addition\, throughout the discussion\, there will be piano demonstrations by our presenters. \nThe film tells the story of Cuban pianist\, German Diez-Nieto\, who was a long-time pupil and assistant of the world-famous piano virtuoso\, Claudio Arrau\, and\, therefore\, a direct heir to the piano tradition of Liszt and Beethoven.  The discussion will focus on the process of transmission of a treasured and historically-important tradition of piano teaching and musical artistry. \nUp to now\, there has been no formal research into the topic of the modern inheritors of the piano tradition of Franz Liszt.  The film\, co-authored and co-produced by the Italian filmmaker\, Antongiulio Panizzi (Netflix\, RAI)\, and the Italian-Egyptian pianist and scholar\, Francesca Khalifa\, highlights how Diez-Nieto’s teaching shaped a generation of important musicians\, including Grammy-nominated pianist\, Erika Nickrenz\, Grammy-winning composer and pianist\, Joan Tower\, and the beloved American pianist and Payap Professor Emeritus\, Bennett Lerner\, through all of whom Liszt’s teachings were passed on to future generations. The documentary was selected for showings at prestigious festivals\, such as the 39th International Turin Film Festival and the Orchestra di Mantova Festival. It has received the official endorsement of the American Liszt Society. \nPresenters:\nFrancesca Khalifa:\nItalian-Egyptian pianist\, scholar\, and filmmaker and Bennett Lerner\, American pianist and Professor Emeritus of Payap University. Francesca Khalifa’s prime pianistic mentor was the Cuban pianist and pedagogue\, German Diez-Nieto\, a protégé of the world-famous piano virtuoso\, Claudio Arrau. \nMs. Khalifa has won first prizes in the Ferrara International Piano Festival\, the Schio International Piano Competition\, the Premio Loreto Lancia International Piano Competition\, and the Niccolò van Westerhout Competition. She has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Cairo\, Milan\, and New York City\, and in recital in China\, Cuba\, and New York City. Ms. Khalifa has presented master classes and lectures at the Pino Torinese Master Classes\, Virginia Tech University\, the University of Central Florida\, and the Edward Said Conservatory in Jerusalem. She has held teaching positions at New York University\, the University of Southern Florida in Tampa\, and the Greenwich House Music School. \nMs. Khalifa is the founder of the music festivals “Classical Thursdays”\, “Beethovenfest”\, and The Hidden Treasures Music Festival. Her book\, “Claudio Arrau: A Journey Through His Musical Legacy” will be published in the summer of 2025. \nBennett Lerner\nAmerican-born pianist\, Bennett Lerner\, is a 34-year resident of Thailand\, a 29-year resident of Chiang Mai\, and a Professor Emeritus of Payap University\, where he taught for many years. He has performed internationally and with major orchestras\, such as the New York Philharmonic\, and has recorded numerous CDs on the ETC\, Bridge\, and Albany labels. His gala 72nd birthday concert at Payap’s CRK auditorium can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3acXKCbfTZg\n  \nPrice: 500 THB

SUMMARY:Tai Herbalism in the 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:Description\nSusan Conway’s talk is based on her book\, Tai Herbalism\, that analyses an early 19th century Shan manuscript about herbalism and magic. \nAgainst all the odds\, the author succeeded in achieving a translation of the manuscript with the help of a handful of elderly villagers able to read the ancient Shan script\, and scholarly monks from Shan State Buddhist University\, Myanmar.  \nThe translated manuscript offers a fascinating insight into the treatment of physical and mental illness in that era. Patients were first assessed according to local astrological and cosmological beliefs\, then treated with a combination of traditional Shan herbal remedies reinforced with chants\, spells and rituals. \nDr Conway reveals the extensive use of plants\, herbs\, chemicals and animal extracts as medicines\, and supplies insights into the use of magic for both good and bad intentions. \nPresenters:\nSusan Conway is a research associate at the Institute of Development Studies\, Sussex University. She studied fine art as an undergraduate and her Ph.D is a study of the history and culture of northern Thailand. She is a writer who specialises in the arts and culture of south-east Asia\, and an artist whose work reflects Thailand’s landscapes and murals. \nCOST: 350 THB

SUMMARY:Salak Yom Festival in Lamphun
DESCRIPTION:Description\n8.30 Depart from LLL Payap Center to Lamphun \n9.30 Arrive at the National Museum of Lamphun. The main exhibition hall is on the upper floor where the exhibition of antiques is divided into three periods: prehistoric\, Hariphunchai\, and Lanna; with Buddha statues\, Buddha images\, heads and deities. \nRegroup for a briefing on the history of the Salak Yom Festival. Walk to Wat Phathat Hariphunchai\, the royal temple of Lamphun\, which dates from the 11th century\, though the central stupa is thought to be 9th century. The temple was rebuilt in 1443 by King Tilokaraja of Lanna Kingdom\, Chiang Mai. \nObserve the Salak Yom festival\, an annual event held in September among the ethnic “Tai Yong” of Lamphun Province. The festival features the presentation of elaborately decorated “trees of gifts” to the Buddhist monks and novices of Wat Phathat Hariphunchai.  \nThe centerpiece of the ritual is a tall bamboo pole decorated with thousands of brightly colored tufted rods\, palm leaf manuscript holders\, foodstuffs and money. The lower half of each tree is decorated with daily objects\, cooking utensils\, cloth\, fruit\, vegetables and various kinds of containers. Traditionally the Salak Yom festival was a rite of passage for young women in ethnic Yong society who prepared the trees and offered them to the monks and novices. The merit attached to Salak Yom is considered to be equal to the merit gained from being ordained a Buddhist monk. Observe and enjoy this amazing festival with local people. \n12.30 Transfer to lunch at Krau Wandee Thai restaurant \n13.45 Leave restaurant to visit Wat Chamadevi\, or as local people call it\, Wat Ku Kut. The temple was founded around 1150 when Lamphun was the capital of the Mon Dvaravati Kingdom of Hariphunchai. According to local legend the temple was founded much earlier in the 9th century\, in the days of Queen Chama Devi\, the founder of the town of Lamphun. \n14.30 Visit the art gallery of Ajarn Inson Wongsam\, a National Artist of Lamphun widely considered to be an artist ahead of his time. SUMMARY:Ayurveda – The Science of Life
DESCRIPTION:Description\nAyurveda is based on the theory that everything in the universe is connected. If your mind\, body and spirit are in harmony with the universe you are in good health. When this balance is disrupted you become ill. A disruptor can be genetic in origin\, for example\, or it might be a birth defect\, or an injury. Climate and seasonal changes have their effects too\, as do your emotions and age. \nPractitioners of Ayurveda believe we are made of five basic elements: space\, air\, fire\, water and earth. These elements combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies called doshas which control how the body works. Everyone inherits a unique mix of these three doshas\, although one is usually stronger than the others. Each dosha controls a different set of bodily functions and it is believed that your propensity for ill health and the health problems that develop are linked to the balance of your doshas.  \nAn Ayurvedic therapist will identify your primary and secondary doshas and use this information\, together with your physical and emotional makeup\, to create a treatment plan designed specifically for you. \nWhile clinical research is sparse compared to studies of Western medicine\, Ayurveda has been shown to improve rheumatoid arthritis\, hypertension\, heart disease\, chronic pain\, anxiety\, poor circulation\, skin health\, sleep quality\, poor digestion and more. \nBy embracing a holistic approach to health and wellness through diet\, herbal treatments\, meditation\, yoga and massage\, Ayurveda is the world’s oldest healing science and well worth investigating. \nPresenters:\nSangeeta Sirinthipaporn started practising natural therapies in 1999 with acupressure reflexology. She saw the need to offer a more complete range of treatments in the search for wellness and a balanced lifestyle. Ayurveda was the key that gave her insights into the root cause of various disorders and the way to balance the bodily systems. \nAt her clinic Sangeeta guides each patient through a series of therapies\, and supplies a diet plan\, exercise program and lifestyle balancing measures to achieve health and harmony. She regularly presents workshops and lectures at Spas\, Wellness Centres and Universities nationwide. \nCOST: 350 THB\nDownload Flyer here:
