SUMMARY:The Overture
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThis is the story of Sorn Silapabanleng\, a gifted Thai musician who started to play the ranad ek when he was six\, beginning a journey to establish himself as the best player in the country.   \nSet in Ratchburi Province and Bangkok\, the film cuts back and forth between the early incidents that helped him become the most famous musician of the traditional piphat ensemble style\, and the events of the 1940s after the abolition of the absolute monarchy.  \nThe Prime Minister\, Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsonghkhram\, was attempting to culturally reform and modernise the country. He changed the name of the country from Siam to Thailand and introduced legislation banning old-fashioned things\, like traditional Thai music and the playing of specific instruments. Sorn was a famous name\, and the modernising government was eager to use him in their reform campaign. But Sorn wasn’t interested and remained devoted to traditional Thai music. He said that as a tree needs roots\, so traditions are the roots of culture and should not be abandoned. \nIn a scene where Sorn’s son brings a piano to the house\, he and Sorn jam together. The music they make is neither traditional Thai nor modern Western\, but is something new\, different\, beautiful. It becomes a synthesis of the two disciplines\, creating something unique; showing a way of doing things that allows the past to be a part of the future.   \nGuy Scandlen\, an aficionado of Thai film will give a brief introduction to The Overture (104 minutes) which is in Thai with English sub-titles. Afterwards\, two Payap University music students will demonstrate the ranad ek and you can try it too.\nLastly there will be a discussion about the film. \nCOST: 350 THB\nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:Railway Excursion to Khun Tan and Lampang
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nAfter having learned about the construction of the railway from Bangkok to Chiang Mai\, we will experience it first hand by taking the train from Chiang Mai to Lampang\, passing through the 1.3 kilometer Khun Tan tunnel and stopping on the way back at the iconic Khun Tan station.  The excursion also includes a stop at the newly opened Railway Museum Park in Lampang and lunch at Baan Phraya Suren Restaurant. \nWe’ll take the 08.50 train (2nd class air-conditioned cars) from Chiang Mai Station to Lampang\, arriving at 10:38.  The high-level railway tunnel at Khun Tan was a considerable if costly engineering achievement and we will pass through it en route as well as passing over the iconic white bridge at Tha Chompu. \nIn Lampang\, after visiting the historic train station\, we will be picked up by two air conditioned 9 seater coaches which will take us to the Railway Museum Park and then to lunch at Baan Phraya Suren Restaurant (located in a historic house).  After lunch the vans will take us back to Chiang Mai via a 45 minute stop at Khun Tan Station where we will explore the station and its heritage and a 15 minute stop at the white bridge at Tha Compu. We will arrive in Chiang Mai at about 5:30 p.m. \nCost: 1600 THB (includes pre-excursion talk\, transportation\, and lunch)\nExcursion limited to 16 people\, so sign up early if interested! \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:Modern Thai Politics
DESCRIPTION:Description\nHaving just updated his introductory book on modern Thai history and politics\, James Wise will talk about how Thailand’s political\, social and legal systems have developed since the 19th Century. Thailand’s 2023 election results energised some Thais and traumatised others. Voters and analysts alike were astonished that a youthful party aiming to transform the country won the most seats\, though not a majority. The Move Forward party wanted to de-militarise society and politics\, de-centralise government administration\, de-monopolise the economy\, and curb the ideological\, political\, and financial power of the monarchy. \nFor decades\, Thai politics had revolved around two big questions: Do you support the charismatic Thaksin Shinawatra and his populist Pheu Thai party? Do you support military supervision of politics? \nThaksin and the military—once enemies—now had a common foe. Relying on military-appointed senators\, they formed a coalition government that pushed Move Forward into the parliamentary opposition. \nMove Forward’s challenge is to broaden support for its progressive agenda before the next election. That’s a scary prospect for Thaksin and the military because\, according to the current constitution\, next time they won’t be able to rely on unelected senators to rescue them. \nIn his recently updated book\, James Wise describes the historical context of these momentous events and trends and shares insights into the social and cultural undercurrents that shape Thai politics. Informed by the latest research\, his book is an accessible introduction for the general reader\, while also offering much to those who want to know more about Thailand’s political dynamics. \nJames Wise was Australia’s Ambassador to Thailand from 2010 to 2014. He also worked in Thailand from 1995 to 1998\, when he was Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy. He now lives in Doi Saket. James was an Australian diplomat for over 30 years. In addition to two postings to Thailand\, he was High Commissioner to Malaysia (2003-07) and had earlier postings to the Soviet Union (1987-91) and Papua New Guinea (1983-85). James graduated from the University of Tasmania with a first-class honours degree in history. \nCOST: 350 THB\nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:The Social Life of Teak\, Presented by Authors Tim Webster and Virginia Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nA Zoom presentation by the authors of The Social Life of Teak (River Books\, 2023)\, sharing photographs and stories from the book\, and discussing the process of making this book. \nTracing human interactions with the world’s most famous tropical timber species\, The Social Life of Teak maps worlds revolving around teak forests\, trees and wood. What has happened to the teak forests and what is their destiny? \nIn this illustrated anthology of oral histories\, people connected personally or professionally to teak speak of survival\, change and learning\, creativity and destruction\, growth and demise. SUMMARY:The Inanna Project - An Open Rehearsal\, Presented by Theatre No Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThe Inanna Project is a long-term creative initiative bringing to life a cycle of Sumerian poems based on the ancient figure of the High Priestess\, Inanna. Central in Sumerian mythology\, Inanna does not just represent a deity\, but is a symbol of femininity\, spirituality and fortitude. Her story\, etched into the annals of human history\, traces back to the third millennium BCE to ancient Mesopotamia\, which can be seen as a cradle of civilization. Inanna’s significance within the pantheon of gods and goddesses was immense\, being the goddess of love\, war\, and fertility. Her figure also reflects the multi-layered complexity of human nature\, and her journeys – filled with humorous and profound trials and tribulations – serve as a metaphor for the human condition. \nTheatre No Theatre has embarked on a journey to bring these ancient verses to life. The Project encompasses the translation of these ancient poems into languages spoken by the performers (including Spanish\, English\, Korean\, Italian\, and Hebrew)\, and delves into the development of sonic creations inspired by the traditions of singing and storytelling coming from the diverse cultures from which the performers hail. With dedication to meticulous research\, translation\, and the composition of song\, the team is creating a performance that strives to transcend barriers that can appear in our perception due to linguistic and cultural differences. The performance also aims to bring to life\, in our modern era\, the age-old art of storytelling through song. \nTheatre No Theatre is a new Italian-based theatre company dedicated to supporting the performing arts research of Thomas Richards. Their work embodies the legacy of Jerzy Grotowski\, one of the most influential theatre practitioners of the 20th century. Theatre No Theatre will visit Chiang Mai from May 25 to 29 as part of their three-year project\, “Across-Asia: Voices Unveiled.” \nSee more at theatrenotheatre.com \nCOST: Donation\n \nDownload Flyer here:
