SUMMARY:Qigong for Balance & Self-Empowerment
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nIn this 5-week course\, we will explore a series of standing Qigong movement and breathing exercises to build sophisticated body awareness\, improve physical balance\, and develop skillful reflexes to protect against falls. Throughout the course\, students will be encouraged to think more broadly about the concept “balance\,” as it applies to both body and mind\, and how to improve it with calmness\, confidence\, and ease. Course activities will include a combination of standing and dynamic exercises and integrated\, interactive lectures based in traditional Thai and Chinese Medicine. Beginners\, as well as practitioners of all levels\, are welcome. Course is taught for persons aged 50+\, however all are encouraged to join. \nAbout the Teacher: \nAshley has 5 years’ experience helping people regain balance and stability within their daily lives by teaching them to inhabit their bodies with presence and confidence. She has supported as an assistant teacher\, and later taught\, Qigong & holistic health education programs for seniors under the Lifelong Learning Payap international program at Payap University\, since 2018. Her approachability\, positivity\, and compassionate facilitation of self-inquiry through embodied experience lends a refreshing approach to conventional “balance and posture” classes. She is an Instructor under the Thai Qi Holistics Center & Traditional Thai Medicine Clinic in Chiang Mai\, has assisted teaching in workshops in South Korea\, Indonesia\, and USA\, and guides international students online. She currently provides public classes and private programs in New York\, USA. \nAbout the Practice: \nThe Thai Qi Holistics system of Medical Qigong is a method developed in Thailand\, which integrates the wisdoms of Medical Qigong\, traditional medicine\, and locally inherited “dhamma\,” the Buddhist science of mind. Core to this approach is the in-depth study of personal alignment. Through mindful motion\, individuals build awareness of the habitual body posture\, movement\, and breathing patterns that cause them discomfort\, both physically and mentally\, in daily life. Through this process\, they become empowered to recognize\, accept\, and transform the habits which do not serve their health and life goals\, and learn to shift them toward a state of optimal well-being and confidence. In the TQH system\, building body-mind awareness and understanding the body’s inherent capacity for healing are the foundations for personal and spiritual growth. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

We then move to San Phi Sua where Lanna Coffee has its roaster and coffee shop. Transportation and a cup of coffee of your choice are included! \nA Bit of a Backstory on Lanna Coffee \nOur roots in coffee go back to 1961\, when Richard Mann began introducing Caturra and Catuai coffee hybrid seedlings to rural villages in the Thai highlands. With his program being widely successful\, the United Nations recruited Richard to head an opium eradication project that ultimately battled opium production by providing a viable replacement – coffee. For nearly 2 decades\, Richard worked with coffee as a tool to end years of oppression that resulted from the opium trade. During this time\, Richard’s son Mike spent a lot of time with his father in villages\, learning about their way of life and the problems they faced. Eventually\, Mike decided to use this knowledge and experience to continue his father’s work by founding the Integrated Tribal Development Foundation (IDTF). \nEstablished in 1990\, ITDF is an organization committed to improving the lives of poor hill tribe communities “in many aspects of life\, including clean water\, sanitation\, agriculture\, education\, health\, and cash crops.” It created a project that would become the first fair trade certified coffee co op in Thailand. The objective was to take coffee farming to the next level by producing a coffee that could reach international standards\, and in turn provide more money and opportunity for poor ethnic farmers. IDTF provides proper training\, improved coffee varieties that can thrive in the hills of northern Thailand\, and processing equipment in order to meet these standards. \nToday\, over 400 coffee farms in Northern Thailand are 100% farmer owned. ITDF purchases single-source\, pesticide-free coffee beans directly from these farmers and markets them as Lanna Coffee. The main market is in the US. To bring the story full circle\, the manager of Lanna Coffee’s warehouse and coffee processing operation (and our guide for this excursion) is Mike Mann’s son\, Richard\, named after his grandfather who first introduced coffee seedlings into the highlands of northern Thailand over 60 years ago. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:Annelie Hendriks Photo-Art - Variations on Rice Fields
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nAnnelie’s photo-art in ‘Variations on rice fields’ describes her reality\, emotions\, personality\, and capabilities. She composes these photo-art images without the use of computer software\, using her photographs of the rice terraces in Yuanyang\, China\, printed on vellum paper. Together with self-made texture backgrounds printed on transparency paper\, she creates combinations on a lightbox and photographs the result. \nHalf of the works that will be on display were produced by placing the photographs in a layer of water in the freezer\, then cracking the ice and sometimes using food coloring to create the final effect – which was again photographed. \nAnnelie is Dutch and has lived in Chiang Mai for the last 24 years. Her last exhibition ‘Icebound’ was held at WEAVE in January 2023. \nDuring her personal tour of her second exhibition\, Annelie will explain the essence of her art and the techniques she used\, followed by a Q&A session. Coffee and cakes are available in the café of WEAVE. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:Rice Outside the Paddy: Maurice Rocco's Expatriate Life and Death in Thailand
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nAmerican jazz pianist Maurice Rocco lived and worked in Thailand for 12 years. For awhile\, away from American racism and homophobia\, Rocco found safety and commercial success as an expatriate in Bangkok. From 1964 until his murder in 1976\, he enjoyed a vibrant second act as a nightlife pianist. During those dozen years\, however\, ideas about sex and gender\, as well as race\, changed greatly. The U.S. looked to Thailand as an ally in its fight against communism. In turn\, Thailand became a key American ally\, and a comfortable place for Americans to be. Rocco lived in the space that resulted. His time in Bangkok traces a shifting society. His murder\, which happened precisely when American troops began to withdraw from Thailand\, was a tragic reflection of this shift. He led a complex life as a Black\, gay farang in Thailand. This talk will not untangle the threads of Rocco’s identity. Rather\, we will sit with the messiness\, viewing Rocco’s years in Bangkok from several angles. We will consider how musicians lived\, worked\, and sometimes died in the rough currents of transnational labor during the Cold War. \nAbout the Presenter: \nBenjamin Tausig is associate professor of music at SUNY-Stony Brook University. His research focuses on sound and politics in Southeast Asia\, particularly Thailand. His first book\, Bangkok Is Ringing: Sound\, Protest\, and Constraint\, was published in 2019\, and adapted into an audio edition the same year. His second book\, Bangkok After Dark: Maurice Rocco and Cold War Global Nightlife\, is a historical ethnography of cosmopolitan nightlife encounters in Thailand during the long American war in Vietnam\, to be published by Duke University Press in 2024. Tausig likes to play basketball and chase his children around. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:The Art and Science of äsis Breathing
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nIT’S A FACT . . . \nTHE DEEPER YOU CAN BREATHE \nTHE LONGER YOU CAN LIVE \nIn the well-known\, twenty-year prospective Framingham Study\, medical researchers concluded that second only to age\, one’s ability to take a deep breath is the single best predictor of longevity. This is not surprising\, given that breathing is your most vital connection to the outer world — just five minutes without it and life ceases. And the breath goes far beyond the lungs…every cell in your body is breathing\, firing molecules of food with oxygen to satisfy your moment-to-moment energy needs. So how well you breathe is the foundation of your vitality\, health and life expectancy. \nIn this hands-on workshop\, you will learn the art of äsis breathing—a powerful\, step-by-step method that will profoundly enhance the quality of your life. \nYou will learn how to: \n\nUse your core muscles to breathe deeply and efficiently.\nTone your pelvic floor for postural support.\nCalm your mind on the go.\nTreat low back pain\, headache and incontinence.\nBoost your sex life.\nImprove sleep.\nIncrease vitality.\n\nBecause every aspect of your life is intimately interconnected\, incorporating this easy\, twenty-minute practice in your daily routine can powerfully galvanize positive lifestyle changes that can last a lifetime. \nWhat to bring: \n\nA towel to lie on\nPerhaps\, a small pillow for your head\nAn empty stomach\nAn open mind\n\nAfter completing a BA in physics from the University of Colorado\, an MD from Northwestern University\, and a Family Medicine residency at the top-ranked Community Hospital of Sonoma County\, Dr. Jia journeyed to Japan and China for intensive training in martial arts and acupuncture. Returning to Boulder\, Colorado in 1984\, Dr. Jia established the Still Mountain Clinic\, which he directed for over twenty-five years. He holds black belts in aikido and karate\, plays the bamboo flute\, is a lifelong student of yoga and Zen meditation\, and is learning to tango. His first presentation for Lifelong Learning\, Living in the Sweet Spot\, was well received by all participants. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:Yee Peng: Lanna Lantern Festival
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nMost of you are familiar with the delightful Thai festival called Loy Krathong\, but how many of you know about Yee Peng or the Lantern Festival which takes place at the same time every year? Yee Peng is celebrated in northern Thailand on the full moon of the 12th month. It is a religious event where various types of lanterns are put up in front of the house to show devotion to the Buddha\, including the sky lanterns to worship the deities in the high heaven. In addition to hanging lanterns\, the Lanna people light small candles called “Phang Pratheep” to show gratitude to all their benefactors including the house and walls that protect them. Yee Peng coincides with the Loy Krathong festival that originated in central Thailand and they share common beliefs. \nIn this workshop\, led by Ajarn Waewdao\, an expert in Lanna culture\, you will learn about the origins and traditions associated with Yee Peng. You will then participate in a craft workshop\, making your own “Phang Pratheep” as well as a rabbit ear lantern. (Koam Hoo Kratai). Finally\, you will learn how to dance the traditional line dance called “ramwong” which is always a key part of these two festivals. \nBe ready for Yee Peng and Loy Krathong which will be on November 27 and 28 this year by participating in this fun hands-on workshop! \nAjarn Waewdao is a choreographer/ dancer from Chiang Rai who first studied dance within her village community. In 2005 she went to UCLA in the US to earn an MFA in Dance/Choreography. She was a 2006 APPEX Fellow and a recipient of a major fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council. She currently teaches Lanna dance at a variety of locations in Chiang Mai. \n  \nDownload Flyer here:

SUMMARY:Are Those Mountains Around Chiang Mai Part of the Himalaya?
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nA quick look at the geological backstory with Dr. Chris Carpenter \nWe in Chiangmai live next door to the highest\, steepest\, most dynamic mountains on Earth. The geological forces that build the Himalaya and the Tibet Plateau\, and tear them down\, remain active today and exert a profound effect on the landscapes of Northern Thailand. \nThis talk is about how the main event\, India’s collision with Asia\, has sculpted the Himalayan region\, and how it continues to shape the mountains and rivers around us\, as we are reminded by the occasional earthquake. Much we think we know is still under debate\, so there will be time for discussion. \nAbout the Presenter \nChris Carpenter received his PhD in Biological Ecology from the University of California\, Davis.  He works with the Wildlands Studies Program\, an academic partner of Western Washington University. SUMMARY:World War Two History Excursion to Chiang Mai and Lamphun
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nAbout our lecturer: \nJack Eisner is a retired university lecturer in English\, who has lived in Chiang Mai since 1998. He taught at Payap University and Chiang Mai University before retiring from teaching in 2013. Since 2007\, as a labor of personal interest\, Jack has been doing research\, writing and lecturing on the subject of the World War II pursuit fighter unit of the Republic of China Air Force\, officially named the American Volunteer Group (1941-1942)\, but more commonly known by the moniker the Flying Tigers. \nSchedule for Day Excursion: \n\n8:30. Meet promptly at Lifelong Learning Payap Center for an orientation and introduction to the history and places that will be visited on this Northern Thailand World War II Excursion\, by Aj. Jack Eisner. (See Aj. Jack’s brief bio below.)\n9:45  Depart the Center by van to visit the Tango Squadron Air Museum at the Chiang Mai Airport\, Airforce Base\, Wing 41. The museum hangar sits on the site\, more or less\, of the WWII-era airfield\, which was attacked by a flight of 6 Flying Tigers on March 24\, 1942. At the museum there are numerous exhibits describing American contributions to the China-India-Burma Theater during World War 2. Special exhibits of vintage planes and equipment remembering the famous “Flying Tigers” are part of this Museum.\n11:15  Depart Tango Squadron for Wat Muen San\, in the Wulai area of Chiang Mai. During World War II\, Wat Muen San became a field hospital of the Imperial Japanese army where they treated wounded soldiers. It was also a POW compound for a group of British soldiers captured in Singapore or Malaya. There is a Japanese-Thai memorial site at the temple where a service takes place every August 15th. Inside the temple compound museum there are various types of equipment and tools\, as well as a large display of Japanese military weapons.\n12:15 Leave from Wat Muen San for lunch at a Thai Restaurant.\n13:30  Transfer to the Black Steel Bridge at Ban Sankhayom\, Lamphun.\n14:15Arrive at the Black Steel Bridge\, known in Thai as the “Saphan Dum” in Muang Lamphun. The bridge is used to cross the San River. During World War II\, the Allied forces attempted to disrupt the supply lines and support of the Japanese army. This black bridge bears the strafing marks of bullets fired from Allied airplanes.\n14:45  Depart Black Bridge for Ban Kat. En route to Ban Kat we will pass the rice field where Flying Tigers Squadron Leader and “Ace” Jack Newkirk was killed in the crash of his P-40 on March 24\, 1942.  His gravesite is still preserved\, although there is no obvious marker. This is a dramatic story\, in part because Newkirk was already an acclaimed hero in the USA at the time of his crash.\n16:00  Arrive at the Japanese memorial\, Ban Kat. In the Spring of 1944 Baan Kat\, which was located on the Imperial Japanese Army Central Route to and from Burma\, became a major stop for retreating Japanese soldiers\, because of a Japanese medical facility there. The soldiers were making their way to the railhead at Chiang Mai via Sanpatong.  However\, thousands died at Ban Kat.\n16:30  Leave Ban Kat and return to Chiang Mai\n17:30  Arrive at LLL Center (depending upon traffic)\n\nMinimum number of participants is eight \nIncluded in the Excursion: \n\nFaculty Lecturer\nLocal guide to escort group\nAdmission fees\nLunch with drinking water\nDrinking water on tour\nInsurance\n\n  \nDownload Flyer here:
