SUMMARY:Yee Peng and Loy Krathong: A Cultural Workshop with Ajarn Waewdao
DESCRIPTION:Description\nLoy Krathong\, the festival celebrated by Thai people on the full moon night of the twelfth month of the Thai lunar calendar\, is probably the most well known and most charming of all Thai festivals. The term “Loy Krathong” literally means to float a krathong\, which is a small religious offering containing flowers\, candles\, incense\, and\, in times past\, some coins. Many Thais use the krathong to thank the Goddess of water and rivers. \nIn the north\, people celebrate Yee Peng or the Lantern Festival at the same time.  It is a religious event where various types of lanterns are hung in front of the house to show devotion to the Buddha\, and sky lanterns are sent to worship the deities in the high heaven. Lanna people also light small candles call “Phang Pratheep” to show gratitude to all their benefactors including the house and walls that protect them. \nIn this workshop\, led by Ajarn Waewdao\, an expert in Lanna culture\, you will learn about the origins and traditions associated with Yee Peng and Loy Krathong. You will then participate in a craft workshop\, making your own “Phang Pratheep” as well as a krathong made out of environmentally friendly materials.  Finally\, you will learn how to dance the traditional line dance called “ramwong” which is always a key part of these two festivals. \nPresenter:\nAjarn Waewdao Sirisook\, M.F.A. Dance\, World Arts and Cultures\, UCLA\, and recipient of the Naational Artist in Contemporary Performing Arts award for 2024 is a choreographer/dancer from Chiang Rai who first studied dance within her village community. In 2005 she went to UCLA in the US to earn an MFA in Dance/Choreography. She was a 2006 APPEX Fellow and a recipient of a major fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council. She has taught Lanna dance in many schools and communities throughout Thailand and is currently a lecturer at the School of Communication Arts\, Performing Arts Program\, Bangkok University. In addition\, she has performed in dozens of cultural programs abroad for the Tourism Authority of Thailand including\, in July of this year\, in the United States. \nOn September 20th of this year she received the prestigious Sillapin Silapathorn Award which names her as a National Artist in Contemporary Performing Arts. On November 9 and 10 she has been invited to perform in the Bangkok Theatre Festival.  She will return to Chiang Mai the evening of November 10 in order to join us on Monday morning!\n  \nCost: 400 THB (includes materials)

SUMMARY:Franz Liszt\, Claudio Arrau\, and Bennett Lerner: A Musical Family Tree
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThis event features the screening of the 2021 documentary movie\, “Piano Lessons: The Life and Art of German Diez-Nieto”\, followed by an interview with Bennett Lerner and filmmaker and pianist\, Francesca Khalifa\, and a discussion with the audience.  In addition\, throughout the discussion\, there will be piano demonstrations by our presenters. \nThe film tells the story of Cuban pianist\, German Diez-Nieto\, who was a long-time pupil and assistant of the world-famous piano virtuoso\, Claudio Arrau\, and\, therefore\, a direct heir to the piano tradition of Liszt and Beethoven.  The discussion will focus on the process of transmission of a treasured and historically-important tradition of piano teaching and musical artistry. \nUp to now\, there has been no formal research into the topic of the modern inheritors of the piano tradition of Franz Liszt.  The film\, co-authored and co-produced by the Italian filmmaker\, Antongiulio Panizzi (Netflix\, RAI)\, and the Italian-Egyptian pianist and scholar\, Francesca Khalifa\, highlights how Diez-Nieto’s teaching shaped a generation of important musicians\, including Grammy-nominated pianist\, Erika Nickrenz\, Grammy-winning composer and pianist\, Joan Tower\, and the beloved American pianist and Payap Professor Emeritus\, Bennett Lerner\, through all of whom Liszt’s teachings were passed on to future generations. The documentary was selected for showings at prestigious festivals\, such as the 39th International Turin Film Festival and the Orchestra di Mantova Festival. It has received the official endorsement of the American Liszt Society. \nPresenters:\nFrancesca Khalifa:\nItalian-Egyptian pianist\, scholar\, and filmmaker and Bennett Lerner\, American pianist and Professor Emeritus of Payap University. Francesca Khalifa’s prime pianistic mentor was the Cuban pianist and pedagogue\, German Diez-Nieto\, a protégé of the world-famous piano virtuoso\, Claudio Arrau. \nMs. Khalifa has won first prizes in the Ferrara International Piano Festival\, the Schio International Piano Competition\, the Premio Loreto Lancia International Piano Competition\, and the Niccolò van Westerhout Competition. She has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Cairo\, Milan\, and New York City\, and in recital in China\, Cuba\, and New York City. Ms. Khalifa has presented master classes and lectures at the Pino Torinese Master Classes\, Virginia Tech University\, the University of Central Florida\, and the Edward Said Conservatory in Jerusalem. She has held teaching positions at New York University\, the University of Southern Florida in Tampa\, and the Greenwich House Music School. \nMs. Khalifa is the founder of the music festivals “Classical Thursdays”\, “Beethovenfest”\, and The Hidden Treasures Music Festival. Her book\, “Claudio Arrau: A Journey Through His Musical Legacy” will be published in the summer of 2025. \nBennett Lerner\nAmerican-born pianist\, Bennett Lerner\, is a 34-year resident of Thailand\, a 29-year resident of Chiang Mai\, and a Professor Emeritus of Payap University\, where he taught for many years. He has performed internationally and with major orchestras\, such as the New York Philharmonic\, and has recorded numerous CDs on the ETC\, Bridge\, and Albany labels. His gala 72nd birthday concert at Payap’s CRK auditorium can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3acXKCbfTZg\n  \nPrice: 500 THB

SUMMARY:Learning\, Using\, and Retaining Kham Mueang\, the Northern Thai language
DESCRIPTION:Kham Mueang\nLearning\, Using\, and Retaining Kham Mueang\, the Northern Thai language in Chiang Mai\nThis presentation is based on what our presenter\, Dr. Michael Calavan\, has learned through interviews with 20 Chiang Mai women and men who range widely in age\, education\, and occupation. He will share with us their experiences and insights about the use of Northern Thai – or Kham Mueang – in the past\, present\, and future. From attending this class you will gain a richer understanding of the use of the local language and perhaps increase your curiosity about Lanna culture. \nDr. Calavan came to northern Thailand for the first time in 1969\, and since then has observed the solidification of central Thai as the primary language of education and official affairs. By combining his own perspective with those of his interviewees from Chiang Mai\, he will explore the complex question of Kham Mueang’s importance to Northern Thai identity. \nThe presentation and discussion will focus on the following issues: \nWhat is Northern Thai? Is it a language or dialect? How is it different from standard Thai? \nWhen\, Where\, How\, and Why is it Used? What situations are appropriate for using it? For example\, how is it used at such places as a municipal office\, a bank\, a hospital\, a fresh market or department store? How does its usage change with family members\, friends\, and neighbors\, or at school and on the playground? \nHow is it Learned and Retained [or Not Retained]? SUMMARY:Water of the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Water of the Heart\n“For 11 years\, I lived in a stilt house on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phya River opposite the Grand Palace. Fascinated by river life\, I sought information that\, as it turned out\, didn’t exist because nobody had traveled the entire length of the river. So\, despite being a neophyte\, I had a small teak boat built\, took it to the headwaters on the Burmese border\, and began paddling downriver. 58 days later\, I entered the Gulf of Siam. I subsequently spent another three months paddling down the other three tributaries from source to sea\, journeys that taught me more about Thailand than any reading or traveling I had done. My books reflect my conviction that to understand Thailand’s culture and people\, one needs to understand the role of its rivers in their lives as well as the symbolic meaning of water.” \nIn this illustrated talk\, celebrated author and photographer Steve Van Beek will share his unique perspective on Thailand’s history\, culture\, people\, symbols\, and evolution as a result of exploring its rivers. \nPresenter\n“Born in Portland Oregon\, and educated at the University of Oregon\, I travelled to Nepal in 1966 to serve as a Peace Corps volunteer in a small village in its southern\, Terai\, region. After a third year in Kathmandu as the Peace Corps Resource Information Officer\, I got itchy feet and hitchhiked west. After four fascinating months between New Delhi and Istanbul\, I reversed direction and ended up in Bangkok\, ostensibly to say “hello” to a Thai school friend in Bangkok. I intended to stay for two weeks but was caught in its grip and\, in brief\, neglected to go home. Aside from stays in New York and San Francisco\, Thailand has been my base for exploring Asia and the world. Its hold on me is undiminished.” \nCOST: 350 THB
