SUMMARY:Caring and Sharing Group
DESCRIPTION:Description\nA weekly gathering to offer support to one another through friendship\, conversation\, sharing resources and referrals\, and simply offering a listening ear\nAdditional Information: Each session is led by a support group facilitator. Conversation topics vary each session according to topics on the minds of the persons attending that day.\nDay and Time: Meetings are held every Friday afternoon from 1 to 2:30 pm. Participants are invited to attend weekly or whenever they want. \nLLL started this new activity because we know that non-Thai residents of Chiang Mai experience challenges in daily life such as major life changes\, personal losses\, transitions in relationships\, feelings of loneliness\, health\, financial\, and legal concerns\, caring for others\, fitting into Thai culture\, cross-cultural and on-line communication\, and finding the resources available here to make difficult life decisions. Rather than face these difficulties alone\, we offer you an opportunity to meet and exchange with others who may be facing similar challenges. \nPlease read the three comments below from participants who attended some resent group sessions. \n1. “The Friday afternoon Caring & Sharing Group provides a platform for participants to discuss the everyday questions\, concerns\, and challenges we face in Thailand in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. I attended the first two meetings and was astonished by the wealth of information that was shared by participants. I look forward to future meetings\, where I can learn as well as offer to help others.” (Barbara Weibel) \n2. “Caring & Sharing at Lifelong Learning Payap has been a productive\, inspiring\, and personally valuable source of information. It has given me the chance to learn from the experiences of others and to make new friends. Most importantly\, Caring & Sharing has brought me peace of mind by reminding me that I am not alone in my journey and my understanding of life.” (Richard Johnson) \n3. “I find myself surprised at how much I look forward to the meetings on Friday. Since I often feel anxious about the future\, I’m surprised at how at ease I feel about sharing my feelings with this group.  I have no other individuals or groups with whom I want to share my concerns.  I can really empathize with others who share their health news\, and I expect that if I get some new unwanted medical test results\, I’ll be able to share them with the group.” (Bonnie Brereton) \nIf you would like to take part\, please click HERE. We will add your name to the Caring and Sharing email list\, and you will get a weekly meeting reminder from LLL. You are invited to come to any or all sessions. \nPlease share this information with your friends and others you think might like to know about the group.

SUMMARY:Breaking Into Prison Health Before\, During and After Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nWhen was the last time you thought about the prison where you live? Who’s there? What did they do? How long will they be incarcerated? What happens when they get ill/sick? What happens when they get released? And\, what does it mean if some people are healthier and safer in prison than in their home community? What does that say about community health and about prison health? \nWe read about people getting convicted and sent to prison and then\, too often\, we stop thinking about them. Their families (may) continue the relationship during incarceration and then\, people are released. Upon release\, they become our neighbors\, workers in our community or elected to political office.Reality check: over 90% of people who are incarcerated eventually get out. \nThis presentation will discuss how prison and community health interact with each other as well as address the challenges of continuity of care efforts after someone is released from prison. We will review efforts in USA\, South Africa\, Thailand (and other not so random countries). \nPresenter:Khun Barry\nSince 1986\, presenter Khun Barry has been working in and around prison systems along with people who are incarcerated and others affected by incarceration (families and communities). His primary area of research focuses on linkage/continuity of care post incarceration. \nCost: 350 THB

SUMMARY:Amulets\, Tattoos and Other Sacred Objects in Thai Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThrough an anthropological perspective\, this lecture explores the historical background\, meaning\, functions and uses of amulets\, tattoos and other sacred objects in Thai Buddhism. The transformation of sacred objects and tattoos will also be highlighted to understand the changing roles of those sacred objects. In addition\, through the lens of amulets and sacred objects\, this lecture will discuss how Buddhism and Animism (also Hinduism) have been syncretized in the Thai Buddhist context. \nThis lecture discusses religious objects that are popular and have been a part of Thai Buddhism for many centuries. However\, there is a question of whether these objects can be regarded as being Buddhist. The ambiguous status of amulets\, tattoos and other sacred objects in Thai Buddhism intrigues scholars as well as practitioners to further explore their historical background\, meaning\, and functions. \nPresenter:Amnuaypond Kidpromma\nAmnuaypond Kidpromma\, PhD\, (Ajarn Nong) is an assistant professor in Religious Studies at Chiang Mai University. Her research focus is on vernacular Hinduism and popular Buddhism in South and Southeast Asia. She has spent extensive time completing field work on Vaishnava Sadhu in West Bengal\, India\, learning and living with locals. In addition\, her research includes studying the lives of marginalized Buddhists in Thailand. She currently is conducting research on the relationship between women and sacred-religious items such as amulets as well as Burmese male sex workers and Buddhist Ethics. \nCost: 350 THB

SUMMARY:THAI WIND: Exploring Thai BL Dramas with a Focus on Chiang Mai and the North
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nOn Valentine’s Day 2025\, we rode the “Korean Wave” and explored the world of K-dramas. In 2026\, we’ll be flying on the “Thai Wind” as Thailand’s own hugely successful “BL” “Boys’ Love” or “Y” dramas have been called. We’ll be finding out what they are (and what they’re not) and asking how the BL industry has come to be “Thailand’s newest soft power”. Focusing on the dramas made or set in Chiang Mai and the North\, we’ll be examining how our region is represented in them and encountering some of the writers\, producers\, directors and actors who create them. We’ll also be keeping a look-out for those that might appeal to audiences beyond the many BL fans. Why have some of the most memorable dramas come from the North? Join us for what promises to be an informative and fun workshop event! \nPresenter: Graham Jefcoate\nGraham Jefcoate was born in England and studied English and Library Science in Cambridge and London\, though he spent much of his working life abroad\, particularly in the Netherlands.Today he lives in Chiang Mai\, where he has pursued his interest in the life of foreign communities in early 20th-century Siam/Thailand. His collection Enchanted Land: Foreign Writings about Chiang Mai in the Early 20th Century was published by River Books in 2023. Graham has given many presentations and led many excursions relating to the life of foreign communities in Chiang Mai for Lifelong Learning Payap. In addition\, he is a great fan of both K-dramas and BL dramas and loves sharing his knowledge of and enthusiasm for these new genres of film with LLL participants. Last year’s presentation on K-dramas was enthusiastically received. \nCOST : 350 THB

SUMMARY:From Crop to Cup: An Excursion to Lanna Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Itinerary:\n8:30 am Depart from Lifelong Learning Payap Center\n9:00 am Arrive at the Mae Jo cherry processing facility. Our guide\, Richard Mann\, will explain the different wet milling processes that they use\, as well as some new processes that they are developing. Cherry pulping and drying will be available to see.\n10:30 am– Head to Lanna Café and the Integrated Tribal Development Foundation warehouse and office in San Phi Sua.\n10:45 am – Tour the dry mill facilities (hulling\, grading\, and roasting) followed by experiencing “cupping” – a tasting to test the quality of coffee and find the unique\ncharacteristics of each type of coffee. Richard will introduce us to 3-4 different types of coffees/processes. He will explain the difference in flavors and how the different processes and roasting influence those flavors. Each participant will also receive a complimentary drink of their choice from the café.\n12:45 pm – depart for Lifelong Learning Center \nThe Back Story on Lanna Coffee (adapted from the Lanna Coffee website) \nLanna Coffee’s roots go back to 1961 when Richard Mann began introducing Caturra and Catuai coffee hybrid seedlings to rural villages in the Thai highlands. With his program being widely successful\, the United Nations recruited Richard to head an opium eradication project that ultimately ended opium production by providing a viable replacement – coffee. During the time that Richard was working in the opium eradication project\, his son Mike spent a lot of time with his father in villages\, learning about their way of life and the problems they faced. Eventually\, Mike decided to use this knowledge and experience to continue his father’s work by founding the Integrated Tribal Development Foundation (IDTF). Established in 1990\, ITDF is an organization committed to improving the lives of poor hill tribe communities “in many aspects of life\, including clean water\, sanitation\, agriculture\, education\, health\, and cash crops.” It created a project that would become the first fair trade certified coffee co-op in Thailand. The objective was to take coffee farming to the next level by producing a coffee that could reach international standards and\, in turn\, provide more money and opportunity for poor ethnic farmers. IDTF provides proper training\, improved coffee varieties that can thrive in the hills of nothern Thailand\, and processing quipment in order to meet these standards. Today\, over 400 coffee farms in northern Thailand are 100% farmer owned. ITDF purchases single-source\, pesticide-free coffee beans directly from these farmers and markets them as Lanna Coffee. The main market is in the US. \nTo bring the story full circle\, the manager of Lanna Coffee’s warehouse and coffee processing operation (and our guide on this excursion) is Mike Mann’s son\, Richard\, named after his grandfather\, who first introduced coffee seedlings into the highlands of northern Thailand over 60 years ago. \nCOST: 800 THB ( includes transportation\, coffee tasting and a complimentary beverage from the café )

SUMMARY:Inspiration from Thai and Northern Thai Culture in Music Composition
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThis lecture explores how Thai and Northern Thai music and cultural traditions can inspire contemporary music composition. Through selected works by the composer—including Dances of a Hill Tribe\, Fall (Variations on Colors)\, and Loi-Krathong (The Light Festival)—the session demonstrates how traditional melodic gestures\, rhythmic patterns\, improvisational practices\, tuning systems\, and cultural symbolism can be transformed into modern chamber and ensemble works. \nThe session highlights the coexistence of Thai and Western tuning systems\, the adaptation of hill tribe drum patterns\, and the role of improvisation in Thai classical music. Combining cultural insight with accessible musical analysis\, the talk offers participants a deeper understanding of how local traditions\, personal narrative\, and contemporary compositional techniques can merge to create distinctive and meaningful works. \nThe talk is designed to be engaging for both musicians and non-musicians\, making cultural and compositional concepts clear and approachable. \nThroughout the talk Aj. Chaipruck will share his compositions\, giving detailed explanations of his compositional choices. There will be opportunities for Q & A both during and after the presentation. \nPresenter: Doug Mann\nAj. Chaipruck Mekara is a well known composer\, conductor and educator. A native of Chiang Mai\, and graduate of Payap University\, he went on to earn a Master of Music degree\, double majoring in Music Composition and Clarinet Performance\, from Roosevelt University. In 2003\, Aj. Chaipruck received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Composition from Northwestern University. \nLike many Asian composers who pursued education abroad\, Mekara realized the value of his native culture while in a foreign land. His music seeks to blend the aesthetic philosophies of the East with the compositional techniques of the West. His works have been performed by the Thai Youth Symphony Orchestra\, the Chiangmai Philharmonic Orchestra\, Northshore Symphony Orchestra\, Whitworth\nWind Symphony\, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra\, at the China-ASEAN Music Week (2015)\, and by various ensembles including the TIMF Ensemble (Korea) and TICF artists-in-residence (Thailand). His compositions have also premiered at the World Choir Games (2012\, Cincinnati\, OH)\, the International Trumpet Guild (2011\, Minneapolis\, MN)\, the Thailand International Composition Festival\, and the Asian Young Musicians’ Connection. \nAj. Chaipruck was invited as a conductor and composer in residence for the prestigious China-ASEAN Music Festival from 2015 to 2019\, held in Nanning\, Quangxi\, China. In 2005 he founded the Chiangmai Philharmonic Orchestra Foundation which includes The Chiangmai Philharmonic Orchestra and The Chiangmai Philharmonic Band\, and where he still serves as conductor and music director. Additionally\, he is an assistant professor at the College of Music\, Payap University\, where he teaches Music Composition\, Clarinet\, Saxophone\, and other subjects. \nIn September of 2025\, Aj. Chaipruck’s talk at Lifelong Learning Payap on Using Thai Elements in Western Music Composition was well attended and received overwhelmingly positive reviews. His informal presentation style\, clear English\,humor\, and ability to make complex musical concepts accessible to non-musicians make him an excellent presenter. \n  \nCOST : 350 THB

SUMMARY:From Missionaries to Spies: The Impact of the Young Family in Southeast
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, June 29: From Missionaries to CIA Agents (1868-1952)\nMonday\, July 6: CIA Role in Laos Secret War (1952 – 1975)\nTime: 9:30 am – noon\nDescription\nThe Young family has had a profound impact on the religious\, military\, and political milieu of Southeast Asia\, particularly among highlander populations. Bill Young was undoubtedly the most famous\, spending almost his entire life in the Mekong region. \nWilliam Young\, Bill’s grandfather\, was the first in the family to arrive in Asia. As a Baptist missionary in the so-called “Unadministered Territories” of British Burma\, William survived multiple assassination attempts and performed over 40\,000 baptisms — amassing the largest number of converts in the history of the American Baptist Foreign Mission. \nIn 1942\, William’s two sons\, raised amid these tribes\, left missionary work to join America’s spy agencies as “tribal experts.” Their assignment: to convert their Christian flock once again\, this time into guerrilla battalions to fight the invading Japanese. The Young family\, at the CIA’s behest\, would later deploy these Baptist warriors against communists across Southeast Asia. \nBy the 1950s\, every male in the family was working for the CIA. By the 1960s\, Bill was able to capitalize on his family’s reputation as missionaries-turned- intelligence-operatives to amass a multi-ethnic army of more than 5\,000 guerillas\, part of America’s secret army in Laos of around 30\,000 men — the largest armed force in the history of the CIA. \nThis course will offer a detailed look into the many generations of the Young family and their influence and impact in the Mekong region. \nPresenter:\nDavid Lawitts was born and raised in Brooklyn\, New York. He first arrived in Thailand in 2002 on a study abroad program. \nHe has been a research fellow at Chiang Mai University\, where he became fluent in Thai\, proficient in a number of hill tribe languages\, and earned a Master’s Degree in Sustainable Development. \nDavid has filmed a number of documentaries about the politics of ethnic minorities in Southeast Asia. Many of these minority groups (the Wa\, Lahu\, and Shan to name a few) were converted to Christianity in the 1800s by American missionaries\, and many later joined the CIA during the Secret War in Laos in the 1960s. \nDavid has spent the last decade interviewing these Christian secret warriors\, many of whom will appear in the documentary films shown in this Life Long Learning course. \nCOST : 350 THB per session or 600 THB for both sessions
