During the talk\, we’ll also have the chance to see some rare and unpublished photographs from the period. \nThe talk is intended as a prelude to the weekend excursion to Lampang\, July 18-19\, but it can be enjoyed independently and is open to all! \nPresenter:\nGraham Jefcoate is the editor of Enchanted Land: Foreign Writings about Chiang Mai in the Early 20th Century and In Bangkok: Siam’s Capital Through Foreign Eyes\, 1895-1935. SUMMARY:Aung San Suu Kyi: The Realities of Power in Burma's Authoritarian Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThis presentation is a personal and scholarly examination of Aung San Suu Kyi’s political philosophy\, challenging dominant Western interpretations of her leadership through the lens of Burmese Buddhist traditions and lived experience under authoritarian rule. \nIt explores the deep historical roots of Burma’s authoritarian legacy\, examining how royal absolutism\, British colonial bureaucracy\, Japanese fascism\, and military dictatorship combined to create a political culture shaped by fear. Against this backdrop\, participants will examine how Aung San Suu Kyi’s “revolution of the spirit”—drawing on Buddhist concepts of fearlessness (abhaya)\, justice (dhamma)\, and loving-kindness (metta)—sought to transform not only political institutions but also the psychological foundations of Burmese society. \nThe talk also helps explain the moral dilemmas Suu Kyi faced\, especially during the 2017 Rohingya crisis\, when international criticism failed to account for the precarious balance she maintained between civilian authority and military power under Burma’s constrained constitutional system. \nPresenter:\nMon Mon Myat is a Myanmar-born academic\, journalist\, and media consultant. She holds a Ph.D. in Peacebuilding from Payap University in Thailand\, where her doctoral research examined The Philosophical Foundations of Aung San Suu Kyi’s Political Thought. She also holds a Master’s in Journalism from Ateneo de Manila University and an MBA from Payap University. Her academic work explores the intersection of media\, politics\, and human rights in contemporary Myanmar\, with peer-reviewed publications in Palgrave Communications\, Social Transformations\, and Springer Nature. \nShe currently serves on the faculty at the Department of Peace Studies at Payap University. Mon Mon Myat has held key leadership roles in media organizations\, notably as Bureau Chief and Senior Management Consultant for the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB)\, where she oversaw strategic planning and sustainability initiatives. As a journalist\, her bylines have appeared in The Bangkok Post\, Agence France-Presse (AFP)\, The Irrawaddy\, and other leading regional outlets. In 2013\, she collaborated with Pansodan Books to publish Heartless Forest\, an anthology that gives voice to twenty-first-century Burmese women writers as they explore identity\, gender\, and the human condition. She is also the producer and filmmaker of A Long Way Panlong\, a documentary chronicling Aung San Suu Kyi’s political journey from 2012 to 2016—a period of transition and tumult in Myanmar’s modern history. \nCOST : 350 THB

DESCRIPTION:Thursdays\, 6\,13\, and 20 August 2026\n6 August: What Do Futurists Do?\n13 August: Five Famous Futurists: What Might They Say About Our World Today?\n20 August: Chiang Mai 2060: Practicing for the Future City \n11:00 am – 12:30pm\nDescription:\nIn this era of global uncertainty and unrelenting change\, it’s natural to think more frequently about what the future will bring. Futurists do this as a profession\, but what does that actually mean? The word futurist might make it easy to assume they make their living predicting the future\, but that’s not the case. \nThe first session introduces the world of futures thinking and strategic foresight. Drawing on practical examples from the field of international economic development\, we will explore how governments\, businesses\, and organizations can use futures thinking to reduce risk\, challenge assumptions\, and prepare for a wide range of possible\, plausible futures. In this 90-minute discussion\, we’ll explore what futurists do and how you might adopt some futures practices in your own life. \nThe second session explores five influential futurists whose ideas have shaped how leading thinkers approach the future in remarkably different ways. Drawing from fields as diverse as science fiction\, systems design\, Thai society\, corporate strategy\, and cultural transformation\, we will examine a variety of approaches to understanding uncertainty\, imagination\, and long-term change.\nThe final session considers how thinking about future generations can influence policy-making and strategy. Using the Future Design process developed in Japan\, we will examine how adopting the viewpoint of “future citizens” can lead to more sustainable\, equitable\, and forward-thinking choices. Participants will adopt the perspective of Chiang Mai’s future citizens to consider growth and policy issues in the present. \nPresenter:\nThe presenter is a cross-sector partnerships advocate\, a futurist and an advisor to organizations that focus on making the world a better place.\nCecilia Brady has had a long career in international development. She spent 7 years at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as a Senior Partnerships Advisor. Ms. Brady has also advised other institutions on cross-sector collaboration\, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); established and emerging bilateral aid donors; multiple US Government agencies; the Government of Mexico; and the African Union. Prior to USAID\, Cecilia was a consultant at the World Bank; she has worked in more than 20 countries around the globe. She turned to the field of futures work and scenario planning during the 2020 pandemic\, recognizing that organizations must be better prepared to navigate uncertainty and change. Cecilia was admitted as a professional member of the Association of Professional Futurists in 2023. \nMs. Brady holds a B.A. in Government from Oberlin College and an M.A. in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). She also holds a Certificate in Foresight from the University of Houston and has studied immersive scenario design through The New School. DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays: 18 and 25 August 2026\, 1\, 8\, 15\, and 22 September 2026\nTime: 10:00 am – 11:30 am \nDescription:\nIn this 6 week course\, we will explore a series of standing and sitting Qigong movement and breathing exercises to build sophisticated body awareness\, improve physical balance\, and develop skillful reflexes to protect against falls. Throughout the course\, participants will be encouraged to think more broadly about the concept “balance\,” as it applies to both body and mind\, and how to improve it with calmness\, confidence\, and ease. Course activities will include a combination of standing and sitting exercises with integrated\, interactive lectures based in traditional Thai and Chinese Medicine.  Beginners\, as well as practitioners of all levels\, are welcome. The course is taught for persons aged 50+\, however all are encouraged to join. \nPresenter: Jessica Handojo \nWith over 7 years of experience\, Jessica Handojo supports people in restoring balance and stability by guiding them to reconnect with their bodies through presence\, awareness\, and confidence.   Her work integrates Qigong\, mindful movement\, breath\, and therapeutic touch to support holistic wellbeing.  Her goal is to encourage and support students in developing sustainable practices for better health. \nJesica is an instructor and Traditional Thai Medicine practitioner with the Thai Qi Holistics Center in Chiang Mai. SUMMARY:Seven Steps to a Good/Great Death
DESCRIPTION:Description\nAs a family Doctor of 40 years experience\, I have seen how differently people prepare for their own death\, with a few being well prepared\, some indifferently so\, and an important minority who are tragically ill prepared. \nThis course profiles those who are well prepared\, how they go about this\, and how they have their friends\, family and professional carers aligned with their well formulated wishes regarding their own dying. \nParticular emphasis is placed on identifying and recruiting your Trusted Friend\, completing your end of life care plan\, ensuring parts of it are communicated to your loved ones\, your professional carers\, and finally on being able to direct your medical care effectively through the stages of progression towards your own death\, and beyond. \nDetail will be considered regarding recognition of illness progression\, onset of a pre terminal illness phase\, consideration of how it is you are likely to die\, and consideration to what kind of psychosocial legacy you wish to leave for your loved ones and carers. \nPresenter:\nDr Brendan O’ Shea\, MD FRCGP is a GP and Occupational Medicine Physician at The Bridge Medical Centre\, Newbridge\, Ireland\, and Assistant Adjunct Professor at Trinity College Dublin. Academic interests include improving care for people with multimorbidity\, end of life planning\, health system innovation\, obesity\, and global health\, which areas he has researched and taught. He has previously been on the Board of Directors at The Irish Hospice Foundation\, Medical Director at The Irish College of General Practitioners\, and Chair of the Clinical Advisory Group to the HSE Obesity Program. Over 3 decades in practice in Kildare\, he has been involved in the training and education of Doctors\, including Undergraduates\, Specialty Training in General Practice\, and Continuing Medical Education for Doctors. There are 3 floors\, each of which displays items and artifacts related to Lanna Thai culture and arts\, with descriptions in both English and Thai. Examples are Lanna Buddha statues\, Buddha statues from the Chiang Saen era\, wood carved objects\, Northern wares including everyday life objects of Lanna and tribal peoples\, and historic photographs of the Kingdom of\nChiang Mai. \nPresenter:Rebecca Weldon\nRaised in Laos\, with a background in anthropology and the philosophy of museums\, Rebecca Weldon has lived most of her life in northern Thailand\, working with and advising museums in both Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. DESCRIPTION:Description\nFor several decades\, Chris Carpenter observed the coral reefs of southern Thailand as an instructor for Wildlands Studies\, a field ecology program formerly affiliated with Payap University’s Research and Development Institute and now an academic partner of Western Washington University.\nDrawing on observations made between 1993 and 2024\, this presentation examines the disturbances affecting coral reefs along Thailand’s Andaman coast\, particularly in Mu Ko Surin and Mu Ko Tarutao Marine National Parks. Topics include the impacts of warming seas\, ocean acidification\, tsunamis\, and tourism\, as well as the factors that contribute to coral resilience. The presentation will be illustrated with numerous photographs and visuals\, offering an engaging introduction to coral reef ecology and the environmental challenges facing Thailand’s reefs today.\nThe session will be presented in two 50-minute sessions with a break and time for questions.  \nPresenter:\nChris Carpenter received his PhD in Biological Ecology from the University of California\, Davis. She will focus on how Chiang Mai’s Old City and the Prathat Doi Suthep Temple were planned to align with particular stars and constellations. \nYou will gain a deeper understanding of how societies built their sacred spaces in relation to celestial events\, beliefs\, traditions\, and calendars\, highlighting the often overlooked sophistication of ancient civilizations. \nYou will explore Vedic architectural principles for harmonizing living environments with the cosmos that are intertwined with indigenous astronomy and cultures. \nDr. Prissansa will discuss the pioneering archaeoastronomy research underway in Thailand and now expanding to other Southeast Asian civilizations. Archaeoastronomy in Eastern culture often involves stellar alignments\, which\, while more complex than solar alignments\, provide significant benefits in site dating by accounting for the precession effect on stars. Archaeoastronomical dating is non-invasive to the ruins\, providing insights into the past through astronomical phenomena that are authentic and cannot be altered by human intervention\, unlike dating by art and architecture alone. \n*Archeoastronomy definition = The study of how people in the past understood and used Celestial phenomena\, as well as their cultural significance. It combines astronomy\, archaeology\, and other disciplines to examine how ancient societies viewed and interacted with the night sky. This interdisciplinary field explores the astronomical knowledge\, beliefs and practices of past civilizations\, including their use of stars and other celestial objects for calendars\, navigation\, and religious purposes \nPresenter:\nDr. Prissana Tamboon earned her PhD in Applied Science and Engineering from the University of California\, Davis\, followed by postdoctoral research on femtosecond laser-matter interaction at Harvard University. After returning to Thailand\, she taught Physics and Math at Mae Fah Luang University\, then conducted research with relativistic electron beams at Chiang Mai University. She then briefly pursued freelance writing and translation\, which sparked an interest in multidisciplinary subjects\, including archaeoastronomy. She rejoined CMU as a researcher in the Quantum Technology group\, and later\, in 2003\, she became part of the Archaeoastronomy group\, which includes researchers from CMU and the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT). \nCOST : 350 THB

We will also explore how the Lanna musical scale differs from the Western scale and how these musical traditions have been passed down through generations. \nAlong the way\, you’ll learn about the role of music in Lanna culture—where it is performed\, when it is played\, and how it connects with community life\, ceremonies\, and local traditions. \nThe session includes live performances on several traditional instruments\, giving you the chance to hear their distinctive sounds and experience this rich musical heritage firsthand. \nPresenter:\nAjarn Bringkop Vora-urai graduated from the College of Music at Payap University in 1991.  In 1997 he earned a Master’s Degree in Ethnomusicology from Northern Illinois University in the US\, then returned to Chiang Mai where he has continued to teach in the Music Department of the university. An ethnomusicologist and composer\, Aj Bringkop is interested in blending the cultural elements of minority people in remote areas of northern Thailand into his contemporary Lanna music compositions.   \nIn 2003 he released “Bamboo in a Skyscraper”\, his first recording project.  The album features the Thai flute in all songs.  In that year he also founded a Lanna contemporary orchestra called “The TIP Orchestra of Chiang Mai” which has performed in many major events around the country.  He also founded the first Lanna Orchestra\, which is a large orchestra consisting of musicians playing both western and Lanna musical instruments.  \nAj. Bringkop has given many presentations at Lifelong learning Payap\, all of them well received. DESCRIPTION:Time:\n8:30 am – 4:45 pm \nDescription:\n8.30 Depart from LLL Payap Center to Lamphun\n9.30 Arrive at the National Museum of Lamphun. The main exhibition hall is on the upper floor where the exhibition of antiques is divided into three periods: prehistoric\, Hariphunchai\, and Lanna; with Buddha statues\, Buddha images\, heads and deities. \nRegroup for a briefing on the history of the Salak Yom Festival. Walk to Wat Phathat Hariphunchai\, the royal temple of Lamphun\, which dates from the 11th century\, though the central stupa is thought to be the 9th century. The temple was rebuilt in 1443 by King Tilokaraja of Lanna Kingdom\, Chiang Mai. \nObserve the Salak Yom festival\, an annual event held in September among the ethnic “Tai Yong” of Lamphun Province. The festival features the presentation of elaborately decorated “trees of gifts” to the Buddhist monks and novices of Wat Phathat Hariphunchai. \nThe centerpiece of the ritual is a tall bamboo pole decorated with thousands of brightly colored tufted rods\, palm leaf manuscript holders\, foodstuffs and money. The lower half of each tree is decorated with daily objects\, cooking utensils\, cloth\, fruit\, vegetables and various kinds of containers. Traditionally the Salak Yom festival was a rite of passage for young women in ethnic Yong society who prepared the trees and offered them to the monks and novices. The merit attached to Salak Yom is considered to be equal to the merit gained from being ordained a Buddhist monk. The transformation of sacred objects and tattoos will also be highlighted to understand the changing roles of those sacred objects. In addition\, through the lens of amulets and sacred objects\, this lecture will discuss how Buddhism and Animism (also Hinduism) have been syncretized in the Thai Buddhist context.\nThis lecture discusses religious objects that are popular and have been a part of Thai Buddhism for many centuries. However\, there is a question of whether these objects can be regarded as being Buddhist. The ambiguous status of amulets\, tattoos and other sacred objects in Thai Buddhism intrigues scholars as well as practitioners to further explore their historical background\, meaning\, and functions. \nPresenter:Amnuaypond Kidpromma\nAmnuaypond Kidpromma\, PhD\, (Ajarn Nong) is an assistant professor in Religious Studies at Chiang Mai University. Her research focus is on vernacular Hinduism and popular Buddhism in South and Southeast Asia. She has spent extensive time completing field work on Vaishnava Sadhu in West Bengal\, India\, learning and living with locals. In addition\, her research includes studying the lives of marginalized Buddhists in Thailand. DESCRIPTION:Time:\n10:00 – 11:30 am \nDescription:\nBased on ethnographic research of displacement and Myanmar sex workers\, this talk provides insight into the lives\, spiritual aspirations and “hope” of Myanmar migrants who engage in sex work as a means of improving their and their family’s livelihoods. \nParticipants will gain a deeper understanding of:\nThe nature of Myanmar Migration in Northern Thailand\nThe nature of Myanmar sex work\nReligious aspiration and hope of Myanmar sex workers. \nThis talk touches upon an existing phenomenon that has rarely been addressed or discussed. \nPresenter:Amnuaypond Kidpromma \nAmnuapond Kidpromma\, PHD (Ajarn Nong) is an assistant professor in Religious Studies at Chiang Mai University. Her research focus is on vernacular Hinduism and popular Buddhism in South and Southeast Asia. She has spent extensive time completing field work on Vaishnava Sadhu in West Bengal\, India\, learning and living with locals. In addition\, her research includes studying the lives of marginalized Buddhists in Thailand. DESCRIPTION:Description\nThe Ho Chi Minh Trail was the military corridor through Laos that the North Vietnamese constructed during the Vietnam War to project their combat power into South Vietnam and was key to their conquest of Saigon in 1975. To Hanoi and its allies\, it was The Freedom Road. To Saigon\, America and her allies\, it was the invasion route into South Vietnam. But both sides agree The Trail was the military engineering marvel of the 20th century. This presentation will explain what The Trail was during the war and what it is now\, through videos and photos: Its people\, the war relics\, the legacy left behind. Paul Carter\, PhD\, has traveled to Laos nearly 30 times\, spending a significant amount of time on The Trail\, which hugs the eastern Lao border in the Annamite mountain chain along the Vietnamese border\, talking to its people and exploring its war history. \nPresenter:\nDr. Paul Carter is a video documentarian of Southeast Asia during the Second Indochina War. A retired U.S. Army Intelligence officer\, with five tours in Afghanistan and Iraq\, he holds a PhD from Thai Studies\, Chulalongkorn University\, Bangkok.   In addition to his YouTube channel with over 27\,000 subscribers\, he is published in the academic journals East Asia\, Asian Review\, the CIA’s Studies in Intelligence\, and several others. DESCRIPTION:Description\nAraksa Tea Garden is a heavenly little tea plantation situated on the foothills of the rich forest of Banchang\, Mae Tang district of Chiang Mai. Araksa is a boutique garden that specializes in producing high quality organic tea. Araksa is the first tea garden in Thailand to be certified both USDA and EU Organic for Farm and Factory. The site is one of the oldest tea gardens in Thailand. Left undisturbed\, the tea plants have not been exposed to chemical pesticides or fertilizers for over a decade The property was left untouched for over 15 years until its new ownership in 2014. Named Araksa\, the garden is now thriving again.\nWe will walk through the lush tea garden and learn about the tea growing process. We will also join resident tea pluckers\, watch how tea leaves are processed according to age-old traditions\, view the factory and enjoy a tasting session featuring 4-5 varieties of black tea. Afterwards we will enjoy a delicious lunch in the beautiful tea room.
