SUMMARY:Tigers and Tiger-Men
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nDuring the early 20th century\, the north of Siam was known for its teak forests and their dangers. In addition to tigers\, so-called “tiger-men\,” or ruthless bandits\, loomed large in the imagination. Titles such as that of Reginald Campbell’s 1931 novel Death in Tiger Valley (which was turned into a Hollywood film) sought to draw on and exploit such fears. \nBut what was the truth about tigers and tiger-men in northern Thailand a century ago? How were they depicted in news reports\, magazine articles\, fiction and film? And what might the true significance have been of the fact they loomed so large in the imagination? \nOvercome your darkest fears\, and join us for this illustrated talk based on contemporary sources about tigers and tiger-men. \nPresenter:\nGraham Jefcoate\, retired librarian and a resident of Chiang Mai for the past 15 years\, is the editor of Enchanted Land: Foreign Writings about Chiang Mai (2023) and author of the forthcoming book (2026) Tales of the Teak Forest: The Image of North Siam in the Early 20th Century (working title). Graham is well known to the LLL community both for his detailed and entertaining lectures and for leading excursions to “off the beaten path” locations. \nCOST :350 THB

SUMMARY:Stars and Stupas: The Ancient Astronomy of Prathat Doi Suthep
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThis lecture introduces the connection between the Lanna Kingdom and the night sky. Dr. Prissana will present findings from the growing field of archeo-astronomy. She will focus on how Chiang Mai’s Old City and the Prathat Doi Suthep Temple were planned to align with particular stars and constellations. \nYou will gain a deeper understanding of how societies built their sacred spaces in relation to celestial events\, beliefs\, traditions\, and calendars\, highlighting the often overlooked sophistication of ancient civilizations. \nYou will explore Vedic architectural principles for harmonizing living environments with the cosmos that are intertwined with indigenous astronomy and cultures. \nDr. Prissansa will discuss the pioneering archaeoastronomy research underway in Thailand and now expanding to other Southeast Asian civilizations. Archaeoastronomy in Eastern culture often involves stellar alignments\, which\, while more complex than solar alignments\, provide significant benefits in site dating by accounting for the precession effect on stars. Archaeoastronomical dating is non-invasive to the ruins\, providing insights into the past through astronomical phenomena that are authentic and cannot be altered by human intervention\, unlike dating by art and architecture alone \n*Archeoastronomy definition = The study of how people in the past understood and used\nCelestial phenomena\, as well as their cultural significance. It combines astronomy\, archaeology\,\nand other disciplines to examine how ancient societies viewed and interacted with the night sky. This interdisciplinary field explores the astronomical knowledge\, beliefs and practices of past civilizations\, including their use of stars and other celestial objects for calendars\, navigation\, and religious purposes \nPresenter:\nDr. Prissana Tamboon earned her PhD in Applied Science and Engineering from the University of California\, Davis\, followed by postdoctoral research on femtosecond laser-matter interaction at Harvard University. After returning to Thailand\, she taught Physics and Math at Mae Fah Luang University\, then conducted research with relativistic electron beams at Chiang Mai University. She then briefly pursued freelance writing and translation\, which sparked an interest in multidisciplinary subjects\, including archaeoastronomy. She rejoined CMU as a researcher in the Quantum Technology group\, and later\, in 2003\, she became part of the Archaeoastronomy group\, which includes researchers from CMU and the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT). \nCOST : 350 THB

SUMMARY:The Use of Thai Elements in Western Music Composition
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThis presentation explores how composer Chaipruck Mekara weaves Thainess—encompassing Thai music\, culture\, philosophy\, language\, instruments\, and daily life inspiration—into his Western music compositions. Participants will gain insight into his creative process and the unique cross-cultural dialogue present in his works. \nThrough the lens of Chaipruck Mekara’s work\, they will explore techniques for integrating Thai musical modes\, cultural symbols\, instruments\, and broader aspects of Thai philosophy and daily life—including the way of life and language—into original compositions. The presentation also encourages personal creative development and cultural reflection. \nThe presentation will include excerpts from some of Dr. Mekara’s compositions and will be followed by a Q & A session. \nPresenter:\nChaipruck Mekara is a native of Chiang Mai\, Thailand. After graduating from Payap University\, he earned a Master of Music degree\, double majoring in Music Composition and Clarinet Performance\, from Roosevelt University\, where he studied under Dr. Robert Lombardo. In 2003\, Mekara received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Composition from Northwestern University. \nLike many Asian composers who pursued education abroad\, Mekara realized the value of his native culture while in a foreign land. His music seeks to blend the aesthetic philosophies of the East with the compositional techniques of the West. His works have been performed by the Thai Youth Symphony Orchestra\, the Chiangmai Philharmonic Orchestra\, Northshore Symphony Orchestra\, Whitworth Wind Symphony\, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra\, at the China-ASEAN Music Week (2015)\, and by various ensembles including the TIMF Ensemble (Korea) and TICF artists-in-residence (Thailand). His compositions have also premiered at the World Choir Games (2012\, Cincinnati\, OH)\, the International Trumpet Guild (2011\, Minneapolis\, MN)\, the Thailand International Composition Festival\, and the Asian Young Musicians’ Connection. \nMekara was invited as a conductor and composer in residence for the prestigious China-ASEAN Music Festival from 2015 to 2019\, held in Nanning\, Quangxi\, China. In 2005 he founded the Chiangmai Philharmonic Orchestra Foundation- The Chiangmai Philharmonic Orchestra and The Chiangmai Philharmonic Band\, where he still serves as conductor and music director. In 2016\, Mekara co-founded the Chiangmai Ginastera International Music Festival and Competition\, assuming the roles of festival director and conductor. He also holds the positions of music director and conductor for both the Chiangmai Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chiangmai Philharmonic Band. Additionally\, he is an assistant professor at the College of Music\, Payap University\, where he teaches Music Composition\, Clarinet\, Saxophone\, and other subjects. \nCOST : 350 THB

SUMMARY:Caring and Sharing Group
DESCRIPTION:Description\nA weekly gathering to offer support to one another through friendship\, conversation\, sharing resources and referrals\, and simply offering a listening ear\nLLL started this new activity because we know that non-Thai residents of Chiang Mai experience challenges in daily life such as major life changes\, personal losses\, transitions in relationships\, feelings of loneliness\, health\, financial\, and legal concerns\, caring for others\, fitting into Thai culture\, cross-cultural and on-line communication\, and finding the resources available here to make difficult life decisions. Rather than face these difficulties alone\, we offer you an opportunity to meet and exchange with others who may be facing similar challenges. \nEach session is led by a support group facilitator. Conversation topics vary each session according to topics on the minds of the persons attending that day. Meetings are held every Friday afternoon from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. Participants are invited to attend weekly or whenever they want. \nPlease read the three comments below from participants who attended some resent group sessions: \n1. “The Friday afternoon Caring & Sharing Group provides a platform for participants to discuss the everyday questions\, concerns\, and challenges we face in Thailand in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. I attended the first two meetings and was astonished by the wealth of information that was shared by participants. I look forward to future meetings\, where I can learn as well as offer to help others.” (Barbara Weibel) \n2. “Caring & Sharing at Lifelong Learning Payap has been a productive\, inspiring\, and personally valuable source of information. It has given me the chance to learn from the experiences of others and to make new friends. Most importantly\, Caring & Sharing has brought me peace of mind by reminding me that I am not alone in my journey and my understanding of life.” (Richard Johnson) \n3. “I find myself surprised at how much I look forward to the meetings on Friday. Since I often feel anxious about the future\, I’m surprised at how at ease I feel about sharing my feelings with this group.  I have no other individuals or groups with whom I want to share my concerns.  I can really empathize with others who share their health news\, and I expect that if I get some new unwanted medical test results\, I’ll be able to share them with the group.” (Bonnie Brereton) \nIf you would like to take part\, please click HERE. We will add your name to the Caring and Sharing email list\, and you will get a weekly meeting reminder from LLL. You are invited to come to any or all sessions. \nPlease share this information with your friends and others you think might like to know about the group.

SUMMARY:Stretch for Balance
DESCRIPTION:Dates: Saturdays\, August 23\, 30\, 2025\nand September 6\, 13\, 20\, 27\, 2025\nTime: 10:00 am – 11:30 pm\nCost: 1\,700THB For six sessions\n( includes honorarium for instructor ) \nDescription\nThis 6-week course\, is designed to improve agility and balance and correct posture through gentle stretching & strengthening exercises. The instructor\, Khun Thanase\, received very positive reviews when he offered a similar course at LLL Payap in 2024. We welcome both previous and new students to attend this course. \nThis is course is unique because it specifically targets senior individuals and provides structured exercises to enhance both static and dynamic balance. The exercises are simple\, safe\, and effective for improving overall well-being. \nBalance is a crucial aspect of fitness that tends to decline with age. As you get older\, your ability to balance diminishes\, both statically and dynamically. Achieving and maintaining balance requires a combination of flexibility\, strength\, core stability\, and agility. \nEngaging in stretching exercises is an important starting point in addressing these physical components. Stretching not only improves balance but it also reduces the risk of injury caused by improper muscle use. It promotes muscle relaxation that rejuvenates the body and energizes the mind. \nThis class introduces effective stretching exercises and games designed for seniors with the goal of increasing flexibility\, strengthening muscles\, and improving movement\, in order to improve your balance and reduce the risk of falls. \nThere will be both sitting and standing exercise according to the participant’s physical condition. Anyone concerned about their mobility and balance is encouraged to join this group class of 10-20 participants. \nAbout the instructor:\nThe classes will be taught by Thanase Chatchawanchaisup\, an experienced fitness and balance instructor for seniors. This is the second course he has offered for LLL Payap. He helps seniors stay active and prevent falls with simple stretching and strengthening routines. \nEducation : Department of Physical Therapy\nFaculty of Associated Medical Sciences\nChiang Mai University\, Thailand (2006-2009) \n\nLicensed Physical Therapist (2009-2024)\n\n\nPhysiotherapist at Sansai Hospital\, Community base Rehab (2009-2023)\n\n\nPhysiotherapist at Sansai Hospital\, Neurological Department (2023-2024)\n\n\nCommittee of Chiang Mai Physical Therapists Club (2010-2024)\n\n\nCommittee of Caring for Osteoarthritis Knee and Falling Risk in Elderly\, Chiang Mai Physical Therapists Club (2015-2023)\n\n\nCommittee of Caring for the Elderly Chiang Mai Province\, Chiang Mai Provincial Public Health Office (2015-2023)\n\nRegistration open now\, open for payment Aug 1 \nCOST:1\,700THB For six sessions\n( includes honorarium for instructor)

SUMMARY:Visit to two Senior Care Facilities in Chiang Mai
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nIn February 2024\, Lifelong Learning Payap\, in conjunction with the Chiang Mai Expats Club\, hosted the highly acclaimed “End of Life” series. The program sparked meaningful conversations around aging\, care\, and quality of life in later years. Many participants expressed a strong interest in learning more about the care facilities available for seniors in Chiang Mai. \nIn response\, Lifelong Learning organized a special excursion to visit four care facilities over the course of two days. The tour was met with enthusiastic participation and highly positive feedback. Due to its popularity\, we are pleased to announce that the tour will now become an annual event. \nThis year’s excursion will take a slightly different format\, with visits to two senior care centers in one day instead of four over two days. Additionally\, the two facilities featured in this year’s tour are new and were not included in the previous visit. This provides returning participants with fresh insights into the evolving landscape of elder care in Chiang Mai\, while also offering newcomers a valuable opportunity to explore available resources. \nCOST : 1\,100 THB (includes transportation and and lunch)

SUMMARY:THAI FILM: NANG NAK A Haunting Love Story
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThis version of the Thai legend Mae Nak Phra Khanong begins on the day of the solar eclipse of 18 August 1862\, which King Mongkut\, Rama IV\, had accurately predicted. The story unfolds against this auspicious backdrop. \nThe tale is about a soldier\, Nai Mag\, who returns from war and resumes living with his wife and newborn son. Unbeknownst to him\, they had died during his absence\, and he was living with their ghosts. In a famous scene\, Nai Mag realizes the truth about his beloved spouse. His discovery sparks a frenzy of fear\, magic\, and a pursuit into the unknown. \nDirector Nonzee Nimibutr is generally credited as the leader among a new wave of Thai filmmakers. He says this film is a tribute to his grandfather and is not quite a ghost story. \nOn the other hand\, the acting coach\, Acharn Onchuma Yuthavong\, calls it a love story – which is how she prepared the actors. \nAfter the showing\, this session will briefly discuss the role of ghosts in Thai culture. We will look at the pantheon of ghosts: their functions and what can be done\, hopefully\, to placate them. \nJoin us to enjoy this serie exploration of life\, love\, and the afterlife in 19th Century Siam. \n \nCOST : 350 THB

SUMMARY:Illuminating the Possibilities: The Story of the Thai Cave Rescue
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nIn July 2018\, the world watched as the seemingly impossible rescue of twelve members of the Wild Boar football team and their coach unfolded in northern Thailand. Against the odds\, and with the tragic loss of two Thai divers\, all thirteen were brought safely to the surface from the flooded Tham Luang cave. Behind the scenes\, the operation hinged on more than bravery—it demanded cutting-edge cave diving techniques\, swift diplomacy\, and clear-headed decision-making.\nOn July 6\, Josh Morris found himself in a military briefing room discussing plans to divert water. He could not have foreseen how his eighteen years of cave exploration\, fluency in Thai\, and experience navigating both corporate and government spheres would suddenly converge\, placing him at the heart of the rescue. Within hours\, he was drawn into the core of the effort\, serving as chief international coordinator and liaison between the global team of cave divers\, the U.S. Air Force Pararescue Specialists (PJs)\, and senior Thai officials.\nJosh’s path—as entrepreneur\, adventurer\, climbing developer\, and cave explorer—had quietly readied him for this challenge. His habit of quick learning\, gift for working outside formal hierarchies\, and talent for earning trust made him a vital bridge between parties. He helped leaders sift through and share key facts\, shaping urgent decisions amid deep uncertainty. For his role\, Josh was named Knight Commander (Second Class) by the King of Thailand. \nPresenter:\nJosh Morris first came to Chiang Mai in 1999 through the Princeton in Asia program. He began by teaching English at Payap University\, but soon turned toward his true calling: rock climbing. He built a climbing wall in Chiang Mai and founded Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Adventures. A seasoned caver and expedition leader\, Josh has led teams exploring uncharted cave passages across Thailand.\nIn 2010 Josh founded The Progression Group\, a multicultural organization dedicated to inspiring individuals\, communities\, and organizations to fuel progression and achieve their highest potential through transformational experiences focused on personal growth\, meaningful connection\, and shared purpose. Josh collaborates with businesses\, NGOs\, and governments to build sustainable futures through education\, personal development\, business strategy\, and cross-cultural communication. He provides leadership training across Asia and has delivered experiences in the US\, Australia\, and other regions. \nCOST : 350 THB
