SUMMARY:Caring and Sharing Group
DESCRIPTION:Description\nA weekly gathering to offer support to one another through friendship\, conversation\, sharing resources and referrals\, and simply offering a listening ear\nAdditional Information: Each session is led by a support group facilitator. Conversation topics vary each session according to topics on the minds of the persons attending that day.\nDay and Time: Meetings are held every Friday afternoon from 1 to 2:30 pm. Participants are invited to attend weekly or whenever they want. \nLLL started this new activity because we know that non-Thai residents of Chiang Mai experience challenges in daily life such as major life changes\, personal losses\, transitions in relationships\, feelings of loneliness\, health\, financial\, and legal concerns\, caring for others\, fitting into Thai culture\, cross-cultural and on-line communication\, and finding the resources available here to make difficult life decisions. Rather than face these difficulties alone\, we offer you an opportunity to meet and exchange with others who may be facing similar challenges. \nPlease read the three comments below from participants who attended some resent group sessions. \n1. “The Friday afternoon Caring & Sharing Group provides a platform for participants to discuss the everyday questions\, concerns\, and challenges we face in Thailand in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. I attended the first two meetings and was astonished by the wealth of information that was shared by participants. I look forward to future meetings\, where I can learn as well as offer to help others.” (Barbara Weibel) \n2. “Caring & Sharing at Lifelong Learning Payap has been a productive\, inspiring\, and personally valuable source of information. It has given me the chance to learn from the experiences of others and to make new friends. Most importantly\, Caring & Sharing has brought me peace of mind by reminding me that I am not alone in my journey and my understanding of life.” (Richard Johnson) \n3. “I find myself surprised at how much I look forward to the meetings on Friday. Since I often feel anxious about the future\, I’m surprised at how at ease I feel about sharing my feelings with this group.  I have no other individuals or groups with whom I want to share my concerns.  I can really empathize with others who share their health news\, and I expect that if I get some new unwanted medical test results\, I’ll be able to share them with the group.” (Bonnie Brereton) \nIf you would like to take part\, please click HERE. We will add your name to the Caring and Sharing email list\, and you will get a weekly meeting reminder from LLL. You are invited to come to any or all sessions. \nPlease share this information with your friends and others you think might like to know about the group.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Smile: Understanding Thai Culture to Smoothly Adjust to Life in Chiang Mai
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThis 3 week seminar is designed to help expatriates better understand and thus more easily interact with Thai people in their daily life. Each session will include presentations\, Q & A\, and small group discussions. \nOctober 6: Thai Values: Myth\, Reality\, and What Remains in a Changing World?\nAre Thai values a myth or a reality? Where do the core values stand in today’s more connected and rapidly changing world? This session explores the concept of Thainess and Thai identity through language\, expressions\, and cultural nuances.\nThe session will also dive into the unique characteristics of the Thai language and their cultural implications. \n\nWhy doesn’t Thai have a true equivalent for the word “I”?\nWhy do many Thai speakers use khrap and kha even when speaking English?\n\nOctober 14: “Happier in Thailand?” How to make Thai friends\nResearch has shown that happiness is closely linked to the quality of our relationships. Yet many people\, Thais and foreigners alike\, experience loneliness in modern Thai society. Could there be cultural factors at play that prevent a deeper connection? And what can we do about it?\nThis session will examine common barriers to connection\, especially between people from vastly different cultural backgrounds.\nWe’ll explore intriguing questions such as: \n\nWhy don’t Thai people often invite friends to their homes?\nWhy do friend referrals rarely work in Thai social settings?\n\nParticipants will also gain insights\, tips\, and practical strategies for building a stronger social circle in Thailand. \nOctober 20: Beyond the Thai smile: Successfully Adapting to Thai Society\nIn this session\, we’ll explore key questions: \n\nWhat is it really like to be Thai?\nAre Thai people genuinely happy\, on average?\nIs the “Land of Smiles” a myth or a reality?\nWhat is it like to grow up Thai?\nHow do Thais truly view Buddhism?\n\nWe’ll also dive into the meaning of the term farang:\nHow do Thai people perceive Westerners\, and what are the social and cultural implications of being labelled a farang? Most importantly\, is integration possible\, and if so\, what does it take? \nPresenter:\nAjarn Jaem Prueangwet is best known today as the host of the Youtube Channel “RealThailander” where he explores Thai culture and language with honesty and insight. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Law at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok\, and has a Master of Laws degree from University College in London. A professional translator\, he has worked with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)\, Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Board\, and has created the Thai subtitles for many movie and TV series. Perhaps most relevant to this workshop is his article “What Does It Mean to be Thai” for Chiang Mai City Life Magazine. \nCOST : 350 THB per session or 900 THB for all 3 sessions

SUMMARY:Sing-Along with Teh
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nNiratisai (Teh) Kittikul is a professional musician who has performed in many venues in Chiang Mai over the past 40 years. A 1984 graduate of Berklee School of Music in Boston\, USA\, Teh earned money to support his studies by busking in the Boston subways. He loves to perform\, especially “oldies” from the 50’s to 70’s\, and he always encourages audience participation. \nTeh’s sing-along at our Open House in December 2024 was a highlight of the event. We are delighted that he will be back in Chiang Mai in September and will lead another sing-along in October. \nSong sheets are provided\, but you can also submit requests of other songs. \nCOST : Free– but Teh will have his guitar case open for busking!
