SUMMARY:From Missionaries to Spies: The Impact of the Young Family in Southeast
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, June 29: From Missionaries to CIA Agents (1868-1952)\nMonday\, July 6: CIA Role in Laos Secret War (1952 – 1975)\nTime: 9:30 am – noon\nDescription\nThe Young family has had a profound impact on the religious\, military\, and political milieu of Southeast Asia\, particularly among highlander populations. Bill Young was undoubtedly the most famous\, spending almost his entire life in the Mekong region. \nWilliam Young\, Bill’s grandfather\, was the first in the family to arrive in Asia. As a Baptist missionary in the so-called “Unadministered Territories” of British Burma\, William survived multiple assassination attempts and performed over 40\,000 baptisms — amassing the largest number of converts in the history of the American Baptist Foreign Mission. \nIn 1942\, William’s two sons\, raised amid these tribes\, left missionary work to join America’s spy agencies as “tribal experts.” Their assignment: to convert their Christian flock once again\, this time into guerrilla battalions to fight the invading Japanese. The Young family\, at the CIA’s behest\, would later deploy these Baptist warriors against communists across Southeast Asia. \nBy the 1950s\, every male in the family was working for the CIA. By the 1960s\, Bill was able to capitalize on his family’s reputation as missionaries-turned- intelligence-operatives to amass a multi-ethnic army of more than 5\,000 guerillas\, part of America’s secret army in Laos of around 30\,000 men — the largest armed force in the history of the CIA. \nThis course will offer a detailed look into the many generations of the Young family and their influence and impact in the Mekong region. \nPresenter:\nDavid Lawitts was born and raised in Brooklyn\, New York. He first arrived in Thailand in 2002 on a study abroad program. \nHe has been a research fellow at Chiang Mai University\, where he became fluent in Thai\, proficient in a number of hill tribe languages\, and earned a Master’s Degree in Sustainable Development. \nDavid has filmed a number of documentaries about the politics of ethnic minorities in Southeast Asia. Many of these minority groups (the Wa\, Lahu\, and Shan to name a few) were converted to Christianity in the 1800s by American missionaries\, and many later joined the CIA during the Secret War in Laos in the 1960s. \nDavid has spent the last decade interviewing these Christian secret warriors\, many of whom will appear in the documentary films shown in this Life Long Learning course. \nCOST : 350 THB per session or 600 THB for both sessions

SUMMARY:Bangkok Nightlife: Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThis talk\, delivered by two presenters in conversation\, includes two subject areas which meet. \nFirst\, Benjamin Tausig will offer a history of Thai nightlife in Bangkok and other cities beginning during the long American war in Vietnam. This period was the genesis of what we think of as “nightlife” in the country — a loosely regulated network of commercial opportunities in entertainment contexts. Thai nightlife today has its roots in the R&R (“rest and recuperation”) economies of the 1960s and 1970s\, and involves many layers organized by ethnicity\, class\, and sexuality\, among others. This talk presents a general history of this historical period and the ways that it shaped the centrally important nightlife economies of the present. \nSecond\, Rory Fewer will present on the cultural politics of electronic dance music in Bangkok’s contemporary nightlife. Electronic dance music\, which has its roots in the queer nightlife scenes of 1970s New York disco\, 1980s Chicago house and Detroit techno\, and 1990s Berlin techno\, has historically been associated with forms of “underground” nightlife catering to non-mainstream tastes\, marginal identities\, and counter-cultural ideaologies. In the context of Bangkok\, however\, “underground” nightlife is increasingly viewed as an economic engine and form of soft power by Thailand’s political and business establishment. By surveying different nightlife formations in Bangkok\, this talk will show how a lineage of “underground” electronic dance music is expedient to both subculture and mainstream forces. \nPresenter:\nBenjamin Tausig is a professor of music at SUNY-Stony Brook University in New York. His research focuses on sound and politics in Southeast Asia\, particularly Thailand. His first book\, Bangkok Is Ringing: Sound\, Protest\, and Constraint\, was published in 2019\, and adapted into an audio edition the same year. His second book\, Bangkok After Dark: Maurice Rocco and Cold War Global Nightlife\, is a historical ethnography of cosmopolitan nightlife encounters in Thailand during the long American war in Vietnam\, recently published by Duke University Press in 2025. Benjamin’s 2024 talk at Lifelong Learning Payap on the expatriate life of\nMaurice Rocco was well received. \nRory Fewer  is a doctoral candidate in ethnomusicology at the University of California\, Riverside. His work explores the intersections of popular music\, queerness\, materiality\, and affect\, particularly as they culminate in the vernacular practices of nightlife. His writing has been published in Southeast of Now: Directions in Contemporary and Modern Art in Asia\, Documenta\, and Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture. He is currently working on an ethnography of queer rave collectives in Bangkok’s underground electronic dance music scene. \nCOST : 350 THB
