Description
Session 1 will be devoted to Thai values. Some of the topics include:
- Thai values (social hierarchy, collectivism, personal space, fun!)
- Comparing Thai values with Western values
- How these differences affect living in Thailand
- Culture shock experienced by both foreigners and Thais
- The struggles and joys that come with living in this culture
Session 2 will focus on how to connect with Thais and make friends. Some of the topics include:
- Is it difficult to make Thai friends?
- Common communication challenges
- How Thai socializing differs from Western cultures, for example, Thais tend not to host house parties as often. Are Thais lonely?
- How you can be both at an advantage and a disadvantage when making Thai friends
Both sessions will include small group discussions followed by sharing with the larger group
Presenter:
Ajarn Jaem Prueangwet is best known today as the host of the Youtube Channel “RealThailander” where he explores Thai culture and language with honesty and insight. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Law at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, and has a Master of Laws degree from University College in London. A professional translator, he has worked with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Board, and has created the Thai subtitles for many movie and TV series. Perhaps most relevant to this workshop is his article “What Does It Mean to be Thai” for Chiang Mai City Life Magazine. This is the second time that Jaem has given this program at Lifelong Learning Payap. Participants appreciated his candor, useful information, and skill in facilitating discussions.
