Description:
This talk is about how building on the foundation of our common humanity is more important for peace than celebrating cultural diversity. It will include examples from Dr. Tamthai’s experiences with peacebuilding in Thailand and ASEAN countries. Given the many conflicts in our world today – including here in Southeast Asia – this is a timely topic.
Presenter:
Dr. Tamthai is well known to LLL participants as he has delivered several well received talks including last year’s talk on The Pattani Conflict in southern Thailand. An engaging speaker, he has a knack for making complex topics comprehensible to lay audiences. You may leave the session with more questions than answers, but you won’t be bored!
Dr Tamthai holds a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from Indiana University. For many years he was the chair of the Philosophy Department at Chulalongkorn Univeristy, but moved to Chiang Mai in 2004. He is currently a faculty member of the Peace Studies department at Payap University. Formerly he was a member of the National Reconciliation Commission for Southern Thailand; the head of the government’s committee to engage in peace talks with the Patani armed groups, and a member of the group of 5 experts advising on the peace talks between the Thai government and Muslim separatists.
