Description:
In this half day excursion to Sanpakoi, we will learn about the history of the area, experience how it has changed and modernized in recent years but still keeps its charm, and learn about one of Chiang Mai’s most famous jewelry companies that has been headquartered there for 45 years.
Itinerary:
9:30 am Meet at the La. Moon coffee shop on the east corner of the “Anusarn building – Sanpakoi” on Charoen Muang Road. (Parking available in the lot behind the building) Order your beverage of choice, then move to the meeting room in the back.
9:45 – 10:45 am Presentation on the history of the east bank of the Ping River (Sanpakoi and Wat Ket) by Aj. Ajirapa Pradit, lecturer at the Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology. We will also learn about Chiang Mai and its values towards lifelong learning as a UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.
10:45 – 11:30 am Walking tour of Sanpakoi led by Arisa Nimmanahaeminda, Managing Director of the Anusarn Building, Sanpakoi. We will learn more about the historic 91 year old Anusarn Building and see how, since its renovation in 2022, it has been turned into a new community hub with around 17 tenants including cafes, restaurants, shops and local businesses. We will also walk to see other historic buildings in the Sanpakoi area which have been adapted to the new local life style.
11:30 am – 12:30 pm Presentation on the history and process of jewelry making of Siam Royal Orchid Co. by the Managing Director, Khun Danai Leosawadiphong.
12:30 pm Lunch on your own. (We will have seen 3 potential restaurants for lunch.)
Presenter:Ajarn Ajirapa Pradit
Ajarn Ajirapa Pradit is a lecturer at the Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology, Chiang Mai. She has a Master’s Degree in Urban and Rural Design from the Queen’s University of Belfast and has been actively working closely with the local community in Chiang Mai. She is experienced in urban planning, urban design, cultural heritage, and public participatory planning and engagement process. She has been an active member of Chiang Mai Life-Long Learning and UNESCO Learning City Committee endorsed by Chiang Mai Municipality Office since 2021, a former working member of Chiang Mai Nomination Dossier Committee and Working Team endorsed by Thailand Ministry of Culture (2017) and an active committee of Lanna Urban Design Association endorsed by Thai Urban Designers Association since 2018.
