Overnight Excursion to Explore Lampang’s Commercial Heritage

Description:

In August, 2025 a rail excursion to Lampang brought us to some of the highlights of the region’s railway heritage, including the Chompoo Bridge and Khun Tan station. This year, we’ll be returning to Lampang for a weekend in which we’ll learn more about the city’s architectural heritage and especially about its history as a commercial center during the early 20 th century.

Itinerary:

Saturday, July 18

  • 07:30 Depart Chiang Mai by train
  • 09:30 Arrive at Lampang train station, board vans, then visit Baan Pong Nak, residence of King Rama VII and his wife when they visited the North in 1927
  • Lunch at Baan Phraya Suren, located in a historic house
  • Afternoon – Explore Dhanabadee Ceramic Museum
  • Check in at The Coconut Hotel
  • 17:00 – leave hotel for our guided walking tour of the old commercial district along Kad Kongta Walking Street. Enjoy dinner on your own at your own leisure after the tour.
  • 21:00 return to the hotel

Sunday, July 19

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Visit Louis Leonowens House and other historic teak houses in the area north of the river
  • Lunch at Krua Mookda (famous for grilled chicken and papaya salad)
  • Afternoon – Visit Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, then return to Chiang Mai
  • 16:00 arrive Chiang Mai

Cost includes transportation by train and van, hotel, tour and faculty guides, 1 breakfast, 2 lunches, insurance, admission fees, pre-excursion talk on July 1. Does not include dinner Saturday night (We will be on the walking street with multiple food vendors to choose from.) or beverages at lunch other than water.

Graham Jefcoate is the editor of Enchanted Land: Foreign Writings about Chiang Mai in the Early 20 th Century and In Bangkok: Siam’s Capital Through Foreign Eyes, 1895-1935. He has given many presentations at Lifelong Learning Payap and led many excursions including the 2024 rail excursion to Lampang.
