Itinerary:

9:30 am Meet at the Lifelong Learning Center for a presentation on the history of Chiang Mai’s Foreign Cemetery from its founding in 1899 to WWII. What was its purpose? Who is buried there? What is the function of the Foreign Cemetery today and what is its likely future?

10:30 am Leave by songthaew (or private cars) for the Foreign Cemetery.

11:00 am Arrive at the cemetery, overview, divide into groups of 4 and receive assignments of which graves to find and what to look for. Participants find graves.

11:45 am We walk around the cemetery as a group, with small groups reporting back to the large group at each of the graves they found.

Presenter:Graham Jefcoate

A retired librarian and researcher, Graham lives mostly in Chiang Mai, where he has pursued his interest in the life of foreign communities in early 20th century Siam/Thailand. His collection Enchanted Land: Foreign Writings about Chiang Mai in the Early 20th Century was published by River Books in 2023. Graham has given many presentations and led many excursions relating to the life of foreign communities in Chiang Mai for Lifelong Learning Payap, including a previous visit to the cemetery in July, 2023.
