In Buddhism, a Bhikkhuni is a fully ordained female monk. According to a survey by the Vijja Bhikkhuni Aramaya Centre, there are at least 173 bhikkhuni, 50 samaneri (novices), and 23 sikhamana (women who are observing religious practices at the temple to prepare themselves for ordination) in 60 bhikkhuni centres across the country. Of these, Nirotharam (meaning “a place to end suffering”) Bhikkhuni Arama in Chom Thong, about 60 km south of Chiang Mai city, is the largest.

Our visit to to Nirotharam Bhikkhuni Arama will include a guided tour of the premises, a talk by one of the English speaking Bhikkhuni followed by a Q & A session, a short guided meditation, and a vegetarian lunch. The talk will cover the history of Nirotharam, the daily life of the bhikkhuni who reside there, and their relations with the surrounding community.
