Demystifying the Thai Alphabet

Description:

Think the Thai alphabet is too complex to learn? The Thai alphabet may look daunting, but once decoded, it opens the door to accurate pronunciation, better listening, and more confident speaking. With a little effort, you won’t need phonetics—you’ll learn the principles for reading Thai.

This course will show how you can begin to learn to read Thai script, to give a basic orientation to the constituent parts of the writing system. Lawrence will discuss the advantages of reading Thai script phonetic systems based on European alphabets.

Participants will gain an understanding of the constituent parts of Thai script:

  • the consonants & vowels,
  • the tonal markers & special characters,
  • the consonant classes,
  • ending consonants and how they affect tones.
