Every culture has a belief system. The Tai have a belief in Theravada Buddhism, spirit power, healing, astrology, magic, and cosmology. These beliefs are expressed in their manuscripts, mural paintings, and textiles.This presentation will give participants a deeper understanding of the foundations of Tai society and will also lay the foundation for Susan’s two follow up lectures
and field trips: one on Tai mural paintings with a field trip to Wat Buak Khrok Luang and the second on Tai textiles with a field trip to a Tai textile collection in Chiang Mai.

Presenter: Susan Conway

Susan Conway is currently a research associate at the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex University. She studied fine art as an undergraduate and her PhD was a study of the history and culture of northern Thailand. A published author, she has written extensively on the arts and culture of South-East Asia, especially northern Thailand and the Shan States of Myanmar. She is also an artist whose work is based on South-East Asian landscapes and Buddhist mural paintings.
