9:00 Talk by Susan Conway on Lan Na Tai textiles. Lan Na Tai textiles are an expression of the well-balanced rhythms of social and religious customs that existed when women were weavers. They also express ethnic identity and class. Fewer women weave today, but those who do continue to produce fabulous textiles. Throughout the presentation, Dr. Conway will refer to her publications on Tai textiles and illustrate her talk with photographs from her extensive collection.

Presenter: Susan Conway
Susan Conway is currently a research associate at the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex University. She studied fine art as an undergraduate and her PhD was a study of the history and culture of northern Thailand. A published author, she has written extensively on the arts and culture of South-East Asia, especially northern Thailand and the Shan States of Myanmar. She is also an artist whose work is based on South-East Asian landscapes and Buddhist mural paintings.
