Come and explore the beautiful sounds of traditional Lanna music from Northern Thailand.

This interactive lecture and live demonstration introduces a variety of traditional Lanna instruments, how they are made, how they are played, and what makes them unique. We will also explore how the Lanna musical scale differs from the Western scale and how these musical traditions have been passed down through generations.

Along the way, you’ll learn about the role of music in Lanna culture—where it is performed, when it is played, and how it connects with community life, ceremonies, and local traditions.

The session includes live performances on several traditional instruments, giving you the chance to hear their distinctive sounds and experience this rich musical heritage firsthand.

Presenter:

Ajarn Bringkop Vora-urai graduated from the College of Music at Payap University in 1991. In 1997 he earned a Master’s Degree in Ethnomusicology from Northern Illinois University in the US, then returned to Chiang Mai where he has continued to teach in the Music Department of the university. An ethnomusicologist and composer, Aj Bringkop is interested in blending the cultural elements of minority people in remote areas of northern Thailand into his contemporary Lanna music compositions.

In 2003 he released “Bamboo in a Skyscraper”, his first recording project. The album features the Thai flute in all songs. In that year he also founded a Lanna contemporary orchestra called “The TIP Orchestra of Chiang Mai” which has performed in many major events around the country. He also founded the first Lanna Orchestra, which is a large orchestra consisting of musicians playing both western and Lanna musical instruments.

Aj. Bringkop has given many presentations at Lifelong learning Payap, all of them well received. His English is excellent and his lecture style is interactive, as he addresses participant questions throughout his presentations.
