Description
Venerable Dhammananda defied convention to become the first fully ordained woman in the Theravada Buddhist Tradition in Thailand. As a result, she faced enormous opposition by the media the Thai press, and senior orthodox Thai monks. She is currently abbess of Songdhammakalyani Temple, the first all-female monastery established by and for Buddhist women in Thailand.
Once a highly respected academic and public figure prior to her ordination, Venerable Dhammananda has become a highly controversial and respected figure. A Buddhist and a feminist, she is an active change agent who practices engaged spirituality with an emphasis on serving the community.
